Prince Bashir III is considered one of the weakest rulers of Lebanon. After the Prince Bashir II was banished from Lebanon, the ottoman authority in Asitana (now Istanbul), appointed Prince Bashir III from the Shibab family to replace him. [edit] How Bashir III Is RememberedThe historian of the time commemorate him with the most cynical tales ever told about a Lebanese ruler. No one mentionns any achievements during his rule, his followers gave him the humiliating nick name "Abou Theen" أبو طحين (father of flour), which is a derogatory adjective according to Lebanese standards. Other anecdotes about Bashir III are told by the comteporary author Salam Al Rassi, as well as by the historian Fouad Aphram Al Boustany. They both tell that Bashir III enjoyed breeding pigeons, but since he had a kind of urological disease forcing him to urinate frequently, he had a toilet built for himself over the roof, so that he could enjoy his pigeon breeding hobby without having to worry about his condition. A saying still remains remembered by the elders in Lebanon - a poetry verse in Lebanese dialect : و المير بشير التالت بشو قام ؟ عمّر ششما و برج للحمام which is translated as "and prince Bashir III, what did he do? He built a toilet and a pigeon tower". |
