Barrhead is a small town in the Canadian province of Alberta The main industry in the area is agriculture, particularly livestock production. The area was originally mostly forested, and still produces significant timber. Barrhead's official bird is the Great Blue Heron. It was named after the Scottish town Barrhead, the birthplace of one of the area's early settlers, James McGuire.
[edit] GeographyBarrhead is located approximately 120 kilometres (75 mi) north-west of Edmonton, at the intersection of Grizzly Highway and Highway 18. The Paddle River, a tributary of the Pembina River flows through Barrhead. [edit] InfrastructureThe town houses the province's correspondence school, which in 1991 was renamed the Alberta Distance Learning Centre.[1] It is also the home of Pollard Banknote Ltd[2], major suppliers of scratch-off and pull-tab instant tickets, ticket vending machines and bingo supplies. Barrhead is also known for its large number of churches. The main recreational area near Barrhead is Thunder Lake Provincial Park approximately 16 kilometres (10 mi) west of the town.
