Bangalore University (BU) is a public university located in Bangalore, Karnataka State, India. The university is one of the oldest in India, dating as far back as 1886, and is renowned as one of the leading major universities in India. The university is a part of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and nears the status of "Potential for Excellence" which is reserved for the top 10 universities in India under the Guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
[edit] HistoryThe University was opened as the Central College in 1886, by the then British Government. It was endowed with the status of university on July 10, 1964 by the government under the then State of Mysore to consolidate institutions of higher education in the city of Bangalore. The Central College and the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) established in 1912, the two original institutions in Bangalore were subsumed into this university. With the promulgation of the Karnataka State Universities Ordinance of 1975, which aimed at bringing uniformity to all universities in the state, the university lost its federal character and became a state-affiliated university. In 1973, the University moved to the Jnana Bharathi Campus located on 1,100 acres (4.5 km2) of land. By virtue of the University producing the largest number of Ph.D.s in India, it has also established a good reputation in foreign universities. Consequently, at present the university hosts a growing number of foreign students. [edit] University departmentsThe Bangalore University has authority over four constituent colleges : Academically, the university is structured into 6 faculties: Arts, Science, Commerce & Management, Education, Law and Engineering. Bangalore University has 473 affiliated colleges (of which 88 have Post-Graduate courses) and several other Centers and Directorates of higher learning and research. There are 41 post-graduate departments and one post-graduate Centre at Kolar (started during 1994-95), which offer 51 post-graduate courses. The university also offers distance education through 'The Directorate of Correspondence Courses and Distance Education'. Students can complete undergraduate, Post Graduate, P.G. Diploma and Certificate courses through this department. With nearly 300,000 students enrolled in its various colleges, Bangalore University is one of the largest universities in India, and perhaps the world. The current Vice-Chancellor is Dr. A.N. Prabhudev. In 2001, the University was accredited by NAAC and received Five Star Status. The University produced many great alumni through its Central College and UVCE. Sir C.V.Raman, Nobel prize-winning physicist, was associated with the University while working at the Indian Institute of Science. [edit] See also
