Bakugan Battle Brawlers (爆丸バトルブローラーズ Bakugan Batoru Burōrāzu), is a Japanese action adventure[1] anime television series produced by TMS Entertainment and Japan Vistec under the direction of Mitsuo Hashimoto. The story centers on the lives of creatures called Bakugan and the battle brawlers who possess them. Consisting of fifty-one episodes, Bakugan Battle Brawlers debuted in Japan on TV Tokyo in 2007. Nelvana Limited produced the English language version and premiered the series on the Canadian network Teletoon later the same year. The English series differed in length from the Japanese version, consisting of 52 episodes compared with the Japanese 51. In February 2008 Cartoon Network began airing the series in the United States. In conjunction with the anime series, Sega Toys and Spin Master released a strategic game, called Bakugan, using metal cards and magnetic spring-loaded miniature figures. The latest season of Bakugan is called Bakugan: New Vestroia. The next one which is coming in 2010 is Bakugan: Gundalian Invaders.[2]
Plot synopsisMain article: List of Bakugan Battle Brawlers characters In the world of Vestroia, a Bakugan called Naga decides to absorb the energy of the two cores that keep the dimensions in place. He absorbed too much of a negative energy found in the Silent Core. The Infinity Core, the positive energy core, has been absorbed with Naga's sister, Wavern. The story centers on group of friends who find metallic cards which have fallen from the sky. They name themselves the Bakugan Battle Brawlers and consist of seven children: Dan, Shun, Runo, Marucho, Julie, Alice, and later Joe. Together they learn more about the origin of Bakugan, the game involving them, and battle against Hal-G and Naga. MediaAnimeMain article: List of Bakugan Battle Brawlers episodes The fifty-two episode anime television series was produced by TMS Entertainment and Japan Vistec under the direction of Mitsuo Hashimoto in 2007. Bakugan Battle Brawlers made its debut in Japan on TV Tokyo on April 5, 2007 and was rebroadcast six days later on BS Japan. Nelvana Limited produced the English language version and premiered the series on the Canadian network Teletoon on July 2007 and then on Cartoon Network on February 24, 2008.[3] Four pieces of theme music were used for the series; two opening themes by Psychic Lover and two closing themes. The opening theme for the first thirty episodes is "Number One Battle Brawlers" (ナンバーワン・バトルブローラーズ Nanbā Wan Batoru Burōrāzu); and the last twenty-one episodes is "Bucchigiri Infinite Generation" (ブッちぎり∞ジェネレーション Bucchigiri Infinitto Jenerēshon). The closing theme for the first twenty-six episodes is "Air Drive" by Elephant Girl; and the last twenty-five episodes is "Hello" (ハロー Harō) by Za Bon.[3] New VestroiaMain article: List of Bakugan: New Vestroia episodes In March 2009, TMS and Nelvana Entertainment companies announced that a a follow-up series, Bakugan: New Vestroia, consisting of 26 episodes was in production. Bakugan: New Vestroia revolves around Dan, Shun, and Marucho being called to the newly restored Vestroia, allying with three new brawlers named Mira, Ace, and Baron against the evil Vexos organization.[4] The series began airing on April 12, 2009 on the Canadian network Teletoon and then on Cartoon Network on May 9, 2009. Due to the ratings in Canada, Teletoon asked that New Vestroia be extended leading to an additional 26 episode order. Because episodes were still being made Teletoon had to go back to reruns of the last four episodes, but Cartoon Network was able to continue straight on into the next 26 episodes and premiere them one day before Teletoon. Teletoon is now ahead of Cartoon Network as of November 29, 2009.[citation needed] The series in Japan, being released as Bakugan Battle Brawlers: New Vestroia (爆丸バトルブローラーズ ニューヴェストロイア Bakugan Batoru Burōrāzu Nyū Vesutoroia), is scheduled to air on the TV Tokyo Network in April 2010 at 7:00PM. The opening song, titled "Cho! Saikyo! Warriors" is once again done by Psychic Lover, while the ending, "Bang! Bang! Bakugan!", is done by Yoshifumi Ushima. Gundalian InvadersIn an Investor's Report on September 29, 2009 Corus Entertainment announced a third series, titled Bakugan: Gundalian Invaders, which will launch in 2010.[2] Game
A strategic game called Bakugan was developed by Sega Toys and Spin Master and released in conjunction with the anime series. The game uses metal cards and spherical, spring-loaded miniature figures, representing the Bakugan. The objective of the game is to capture three Gate cards.[5] Battle is engaged when rolled Bakugan magnetically pop open on the same gate card. G-Power from the Bakugan Ability cards (at player's option), Traps (at player's option), and Gate card are summed to determine the battle's winner. The winner is whichever player's Bakugan has the highest total "G-Power." The game can also be played with up to four people. The rules remain the same as a regular game. Bakugan may also be played in Big game style where players use six Gate Cards, six Ability Cards and six Bakugan, instead of three of each as in a normal game. Instead of capturing three Gate Cards, a player must capture six to win the game. The game has spawned numerous accessories, such as carry clips to store three Bakugan marbles at a time, launchers to fire the marbles at the game arena, soft plastic and hard plastic play area mats and special gauntlets to store cards with built-in calculators to allow players to quickly calculate "G-Power" totals. Toys/ElectronicsIn February 2009 Digital Blue announced a new line of Bakugan branded electronics for the 7-14 (as confirmed in an interview of popular toys marketed at kids) age group. Products include branded digital cameras, alarm clocks and other electronics. The line is expected in retail in Spring 2009.[6] Main article: Bakugan (video game) A video game has been created for Wii, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 platforms. The plot involves the player, who wants to become a Bakugan Battle Brawler, and an exclusive Bakugan named Leonidas, that can have every attribute. The game has 35 brawlers to choose[7]. The game was released on October 20, 2009. On September 29, 2009, Corus Entertainment announced that a Bakugan MMOG is currently in development for a 2010 launch.[2] Bakugan Battle Brawlers were given the 2009 Toy of the Year award by the Toy Industry Association.[8] ReceptionAccording to IGN, it is one of the leading kids games for the Nintendo DS in 2009.
