Bak Seo-saeng (?-?) was a scholar-official of the Joseon Dynasty Korea in 15th century. He was also diplomat and ambassador, representing Joseon interests in the tongsinsa (diplomatic mission) to the Ashikaga shogunate (Muromachi bafuku) in Japan.[1]
[edit] 1428 mission to JapanKing Sejong dispatched a diplomatic mission to Japan in 1428-1429. This embassy to court of Ashikaga Yoshinori was led by Bak Seo-saeng. Its purpose was to respond to a message sent to the Joseon court by the Japanese shogun.[2] The Japanese hosts may have construed this mission as tending to confirm a Japanocentric world order.[3] Bak Seo-saeng's actions were more narrowly focused in negotiating protocols for Joseon-Japan diplomatic relations.[2] The report prepared at the end of this mission urged the Joseon court to supplement negotiations with the shogunate. Bak Seo-saeng proposed initiating a direct approach to the daimyo who controlled the regions where the Japanese pirates had home ports.[4] The delegation was able to learn about Japan and its people; and detailed reports were compiled when they returned from their stay in Kyoto. For example, the ambassador reported that "people liked bathing and cleaning their bodies."[5] [edit] See also[edit] Notes
