Bagansiapiapi (also known as Bagan 峇眼 or Baganapi 峇眼亞比) is a small town near Dumai, Riau, Indonesia. It was located at the delta of Rokan River, east coast of Sumatra, across the strait west of Malacca. The town area was populated mainly by Chinese who arrived at the end of 19th century or the beginning of 20th century. Eighteen Chinese immigrants sailed to Bagansiapiapi around 200 years ago and finally settled at this place. All were from the same family named Ang / Hong.[citation needed] Later on, more people followed and came to Bagan to find new life and avoid economic hardships in Hokkien (China) at that time. Every year, the Chinese community celebrates the Bagansiapiapi anniversary on the 16th, 5th month of the Lunar year. It was strongly believed that the group (Chinese) landed on Bagansiapiapi on that day.[who?] Most of Chinese immigrant are Hokkien migrated from Tang-Ua (TongAn, now part of E-Meng/Xiamen), Kim-Mng (JinMen/Kinmen), and Cin-Kang (JinJiang/Jinjiang). There are some Teochew living mainly at the southern part and a minority of Khek/Hakka. Most of Chinese communicate in Tang-Ua dialect of Hokkien. Bagansiapiapi had been one of the largest fish producers in the world in the late 1980s or early of 1990s. It ranked third in the world.[who?] Beside of fishery, Bagansiapiapi was also famous in swallow bird nest farming. Indonesia's bird's nests are famous for its quality and well liked by consumers. This industry has lead Bagansiapiapi to a new era of economic growth which is involving investment, high demand of building construction for farming, export growth. Meanwhile, it is also reduce number of job opportunities which is increase rate of urbanization. In recent years, urbanization has been an issue. Most of youth left the town after high school to pursue better life opportunity or endorsing higher education in large city. They will normally comeback during Chinese New Year for family reunion.
[edit] Fishing TownBagansiapiapi is a city of fishermen in the 1980s was noted as one of the largest and most busy fish producer in Indonesia and. In addition, this area is also the second highest production of fish in the world after Norway. Heyday Bagansiapiapi achieved at the time of the Dutch East Indies, precisely in 1930. At that time, the port Bagansiapiapi facing directly to the Malacca produce 300,000 tons of fish per year. But this triumph does not stand up to the present time, after the start of the fishery overcast since 1970's. It is a 6 hours travel by road from Pekanbaru, capital of Riau, and 2.5 hours from Dumai. Transportation has been an area that needs continuous improvement by the government. Currently there is no airport and the main transport is mainly by road. The local government has been improving the town infrastructure in last few years, for example by widening roads and improving street lighting. Other alternative, visitors from North Sumatra / Medan can reach by road about 11 hours. The local delights /local famous foods are the typical bagansiapiapi curry rice(Kari Peng), Wan Tan Mee, the special Cah Kwei Tyao and other local delights which is almost the same as the Peranakan foods in Malaysia /Singapore. To attract a new visitors to enhance the tourism thus creating an extra income for the all the people in bagansiapiapi, this need a serious investment in infrastructure (roads, public transportations, security & comfortability), exposure to the outside world, city development and most important clean!
