Back at the Barnyard is an Emmy Award winning Nickelodeon show that is a spin-off of the 2006 film Barnyard. The debut series premiered on September 29, 2007 on Nickelodeon. The show is produced by Omation, the animation division of O Entertainment, in association with Nicktoons Studios. The show mainly features pop culture references and parodies for the entertainment of the show. In March 2008, Nickelodeon renewed the show for a second season consisting of 20 episodes. This is Steve Oedekerk's second animated series for Nickelodeon, as he was one of the executive producers (but not creator) for The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.
[edit] PlotThe plot generally revolves around Otis (a cow) and his barnyard friends. Otis wants to goof around, but has to be responsible and protect the inhabitants of the farm. He and his friends Pip (a mouse), Abby (a cow), Pig (a pig), Freddy (a ferret), Peck (a rooster), Duke (a dog), and Bessy (another cow) have many crazy adventures, while at the same time help Otis protect the farm. The setting is unknown but it is heavily implied to be in Arizona. Otis and his friends have to overtake many obstacles like preventing Mrs. Beady in proving that animals can talk and distracting the farmer for them to throw a party. In every episode, Otis usually gets himself in a sticky situation where his friends have to come to the rescue, resulting in him learning a lesson. Sometimes, the animals dress up like people when out in public, in which nobody notices except Mrs. Beady. At first, the setting of the show was unknown, the town then dripped the name Oedeville (in which Steve Oedekerk most likely named after himself). The setting of Back at the Barnyard resembles Arizona (the Grand Canyon has been depicted in some episodes, i.e. Cowman and Ratboy) and some questioned whether or not it's in Arizona or a made-up setting. According to the original film and an episode of the spin off, Oedeville is 20 miles from Phoenix, a realistic city in Arizona. It is considered that the setting of the spin-off series (and the original film) is Oedeville, Arizona, near the real-life city of Phoenix, Arizona. There is still debate of whether this should be the official location because there are many scenes in the show where the nature background doesn't look at all like Arizona (it is green and hilly, while Arizona is arid and not that green). [edit] Characters[edit] Main Characters[edit] OtisOtis is a black and white bull who is the leader of the barnyard. He was given an udder for unknown reasons and is usually referred to as a "cow". He is funny, goofy, strong, smart, and extremely hunky and handsome. He is a huge party animal and enjoys anything with action or stunts and enjoys watching sports bloopers. He is the show's primary protagonist. Otis is the adopted son of Ben, the former barnyard leader who got killed by coyotes in the film. Otis's superhero alter-ego is "Cowman, the Uddered Avenger". Another one of his other aliases is "Professor Exposition". He has a crush on Abby which was revealed in Cowman the Uddered Avenger. As revealed in the show's Christmas special, Otis went to high school with two of Santa Claus's reindeer, Donner and Blitzen. [edit] PipPip is a gray, wise-cracking barn mouse who is Otis's best friend. Pip speaks with a slight Mexican accent and often rides around on Otis's shoulder. Pip is known for his crush on Bessy, the sassy cow best friend of Abby, the show's replacement for Daisy, Otis's love interest in the movie, but the "beautiful" Bessy always rejects him with great scorn. Pip dreams of the day when Bessy will come to her senses, fall madly in love with him, marry him, and together they have "beautiful mouse-cow babies." So far, that day seems unlikely to come true. Pip has a photo of Bessy in his hole, as shown in "Home Sweet Hole." His super hero alter ego is "Rat Boy". [edit] AbbyAbby is a blonde, physically attractive cow who lives on the barnyard. She is the replacement for Daisy, who was Otis's love interest in the movie. However, Abby, unlike Daisy, who she is the replacement for, is something of a tomboy and is a gifted wrestler and a former trapeze artist. However, Abby still shows a girly personality at certain points. There have been certain points on the show where she and Otis seem to have romantic feelings for each other, especially when their mini-clones fell in love. Abby has a love shrine of Otis in her drawer. In the episode Cupig, it was revealed that Abby isn't a real blonde when Pip found blonde hair dye in her stall. Two relatives of Abby's on the show mentioned were her unnamed crazy uncle, and her cousin Veronica, who made an appearance in the episode "Abby and Veronica". [edit] PigPig is a filthy, overweight pig who lives on the barnyard and is the only character in the show to be named after his own species. Pig has various segments on the show that often interrupt the episode at its most important parts, and a few memorable segments are "Viewer Mail", "Dr. Pig." and "Hollywood: Fact or Fiction?" Pig has a strong, but quite strange, love for unicorns, and he wished for one in the Christmas special. Pig is also the animal on the barnyard to dress up and disguise as humans the most times. He has a pet skunk named Skunky, and in one episode he is shown to have a beautiful singing voice. In another episode, it was shown that Pig is related to the pet pigs of Prince Fripplehoot, telling by a birthmark on his backside and is therefore royal, but the stuck-up pigs turned him down. [edit] FreddyFreddy is a ferret who is best friends with Peck who he is often tempted to eat. Throughout the series, Freddy's urge to eat Peck seems to melt away more and more (but still he almost eats Peck even when his urge seems to be gone for good, showing that perhaps Freddy will never truly grow out of his temptation.) Freddy may not be a barn animal, but still he hangs around the barnyard with his pals. Freddy is very mentally ill, and has multiple personalities. [edit] PeckPeck is a rooster and the best friend of Freddy, who is always tempted to consume him. He seems to share a slight rivalry with Root, a larger rooster on the barnyard. Peck is shown to have a crush on a beautiful hen named Hannah. [edit] DukeDuke is the sheepdog who is in charge of the Farmer's flock of intelligent sheep. Duke's unintelligence is clearly no match for the intellect possessed by the sheep he herds. Duke loves being a leader and being in charge of things. This was first shown in the movie after Ben, the barnyard leader, was killed and Duke wanted to take his position as leader, but no other animal wanted him to take the place of Ben and wanted Otis instead. So in the series, Duke fancies himself as the barnyard's unofficial safety inspector and makes the barnyard watch a boring safety film once every year. [edit] BessyBessy is a sassy brown cow who lives on the barnyard. In the movie she was Daisy's best friend, but after Daisy was replaced by the more tomboyish Abby, she now serves as Abby's best friend. Although Bessy is known to be the object of Pip's affections, she scornfully fails to return the same feelings. Only in Pip's daydreams is Bessy his girlfriend or bride. [edit] Nora BeadyMrs. Nora Beady is a crazy old woman who lives close by to the barnyard and serves as the show's antagonist. She knows that the barnyard animals are anthropomorphic and wants everyone to know that, but only ends up making herself appear crazier instead. Her nephew is Eugene (a.k.a. Snotty Boy). [edit] Farmer BuyerFarmer Buyer is the owner of the barnyard who Otis cares deeply for. Still, when the animals need some time alone to work on a private project (a movie they are trying to make, a theme park they are attempting to build, etc.), that doesn't stop them from trying to drive the Farmer away with a prank phone call. His last name is Buyer. [edit] Recurring Characters[edit] Nathan Randal Beady IIIMr. Nathan Beady, or simply called Nathan, is Mrs. Beady's reluctant husband who miserably tries to convince his wife that animals don't talk. [edit] Eugene "Snotty Boy" BeadyEugene is the obnoxious, hateful, and bratty nephew of Nora Beady. He easily falls for pranks pulled on him by the barn animals, being very unintelligent, and is the object of their hatred. The animals call him "Snotty Boy." Eugene is extremely obese and the only person who he is ever nice to is his aunt and tortures his uncle. [edit] SheepThe sheep are hang around together in an eternally-close herd and are more intelligent than their sheepdog Duke, who they often scoff at because of his stupidity, and in one episode the sheep try to escape from the barnyard and away from Duke's unintelligent leadership. [edit] EverettEverett is the farmer's old brown dog and is the barnyard's local senior citizen. The elderly dog first appeared in the movie, where he celebrated his thirteenth birthday. Everett is the oldest animal on the barnyard. Everett is depicted as being droopy and is as thin as his own skeleton, which can easily be seen. Everett uses a walker to get around, except for when he is playing an instrument, and hardly ever talks, but in very few episodes he does have speaking lines. [edit] SkunkySkunky is Pig's pet skunk who is considered as the latter's best friend, much to Otis' chagrin, as seen in Pig Amok. [edit] Tony TwocheeksTony Twocheeks is a gopher entrepreneur who lives near the barnyard. He often rips off those who buy his goods. He has an Elvis-like hairdo, sunglasses, and is sometimes seen chewing on a toothpick, giving him a "tough" appearance. [edit] BaxterBaxter is a small white dog with pointed ears who became Duke's nemesis after he met him at the veterinarian's office. He disguised as Duke with the help of dark brown spray paint to give him spots and markings like Duke's. Although Baxter seems to be a stray, he might have an owner in order to be able to afford medical care. [edit] BuckBuck is a brown horse who lives on the barnyard. He has a terrible temper and despises Otis. In the episode where Otis dresses up as a girl to prove that they live easier lives than boys and ends up becoming Snotty Boy's temporary girlfriend, Buck also dressed up as a girl only with a more realistic costume and was Snotty Boy's second girlfriend, who he went out with behind Otis's back. [edit] Stinky McStupid HeadSnotty Boy's pet snake. He talks just like him. In the episode Snotty's New Pet, Snotty Boy tries to feed Pip to his snake. Later his Snake rejects eating Pip, realizing he is his only friend. [edit] GoatGoat is a brownish-gray goat who is known for giving rides to Otis (i.e. The Great Sheep Escape, The Chronicles of Barnia). [edit] Otis's CloneA clone of Otis that is shown in the episode Little Otis. He acts very much like Otis, except for the fact that he lets out his emotions (like watching sports bloopers and being in love with Abby). [edit] Abby's CloneA clone of Abby that is shown in the episode Little Otis. She is the little Otis's girlfriend. [edit] Pizza TwinsThe pizza twins are identical twin pizza delivery boys who often deliver pizza to the barnyard. They are known to be very unintelligent and whenever they manage to successfully perform a task (either good or bad) they chant their famous line, "Doodley-doo-doo doo." The pizza twins first appeared in the movie where they delivered their first pizza to the barnyard. [edit] Hilly Burford[1]Hilly Burford is the series' reporter and is a judge in "Do You Gots It?". His voice and characterization is a tribute to the longtime baseball announcer Harry Caray as impersonated by Will Ferrell. Hilly is also the host of the barnyard game show "Trivia Cash A-Ding-Dong" in the Back at the Barnyard episode "A Beautiful Freddy". [edit] Officer Fred O'HalonOfficer Fred O'Halon is the series' police officer. [edit] Jessica AllspiceJessica Allspice is a celebrity pop diva and was featured as a judge on the show Do You Gots It? Her catchphrase is, "I wanna party with you." She is a spoof of Jessica Simpson. [edit] Very minor characters[edit] Weird AlWeird Al is Bessy's famous accordion playing friend. He is voiced by himself. He only appears once. It is also revealed he is acctually a talking horse. [edit] Film Only Characters[edit] DaisyDaisy was Otis's love interest in the movie. She later gave birth to a male calf and named it Ben after Otis's father, and because Daisy's husband was probably killed after a storm blew Daisy and Bessy's herd away, Otis became baby Ben's adoptive father. In the series, Daisy was replaced by Abby, who was more of a tomboy. No mention of Daisy or her son Ben has come up in the series ever since. [edit] BenBen is the deceased former leader of the barnyard. In the movie, he was killed by a pack of evil coyotes. He is Otis's adoptive father. He is more laid back than Otis. Daisy also named her baby calf after him. Ben has never been mentioned on the show once and seems to have completely vanished from the barnyard after his death. [edit] Cast
[edit] History[edit] Beginning Origin (2004-2007)Around Summer 2004, Steve Oedekerk began pre-production of creating a new film that stars barnyard animals. Later in Fall 2005, Steve has ended production of The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius after working with Butch Hartman with the last two Jimmy Timmy Movies, which Production officially closed November 2006. Through April 2006 and August 2006, commercial shorts, and teasers begin to be released. Nickelodeon then released Steve's new movie, Barnyard in August 2006. After the movie's successful reception, Nickelodeon has given the green light for his new 3-D Nicktoon, "Back at the Barnyard". In March 2007, Nickelodeon released promotional commercials for the new series during the 2007 Kids' Choice Awards. [edit] Popularity (2007-2009)Back at the Barnyard premiered on Nickelodeon's Worldwide Day of Play in September 2007. After its premiere, the new series was classified as a hit. Back at the Barnyard remained a popular Nicktoon into 2008. In fact, Back at the Barnyard characters Otis and Pip made appearances with Miranda Cosgrove of iCarly and Lil' JJ of Just Jordan at the 2008 Kids' Choice Awards. During the return on SuperStuffed Nicktoons Weekend, a brand new Back at the Barnyard movie aired on November 29, 2008. On January 19, 2009, the Original movie "Barnyard" aired for the first time on Television. In March 2008, because of the high ratings, Nickelodeon gave the series another season, which debuted October 24, 2008.
