[edit] History

Australia competed in its first Fed Cup in 1963. They are one of four nations to have competed in every edition of the tournament. Australia have won the Cup on seven occasions, making them the second most successful team.

In 2007, Australia was placed in the World Group II. Unfortunately, they lost to Austria (1-4) in the World Group II tournament and to Ukraine (1-4) in the World Group II playoff. As a result, Australia was relegated to Asia/Oceania Group I. In 2008, Australia didn't qualify to the World Group II playoff, but didn't got relegated to the Asia/Oceania Group II. In 2009, Australia defeated Thailand, South Korea and Chinese Taipei without losing a single match. In the playoffs for the World Group II playoffs, Australia defeated New Zealand without losing a set (3-0).

In the World Group II playoff, Australia defeated Switzerland (3-0) after Stosur and Dokic won their matches. (After three matches)

In 2010, Australia will be placed in the World Group II. Should Australia win both ties in the World Group II round and the World Group I playoff, Australia will guarantee a place in the World Group I since 2004 (where the World Group II didn't exist then).
