Athanasios Orphanides is a Cypriot monetary macroeconomist. He is currently the Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus, one of the member banks of the Eurosystem. Previously he served in the Division of Monetary Affairs of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve in Washington, D.C.

Orphanides' research has emphasized that since economic statistics are published after a substantial time lag, and are frequently revised, monetary policy and fiscal policy decisions are inevitably taken without full knowledge of the current state of the economy. In particular, he has argued that the Taylor rule may be less effective for stabilizing the macroeconomy due to the errors in real-time data than it would be if monetary policy makers could anticipate subsequent data revisions.[1]
