[edit] History

[edit] Formation

Following the founding of Ashford United in 1880 and their collapse in the 1906-7 season, and the subsequent founding of South Eastern & Chatham Railway Football Club and their collapse in 1927, a decision to found Ashford Town was taken at a meeting in April 1930 chaired by Sir Charles Iggledon, who was the editor of the Kentish Express. Ashford Town were elected to the Kent League, and played their first match on August 30th of the same year at the railway works ground at home to Canterbury Waverley. The result was a 4-2 victory.[1] It was around then that the club acquired its nickname of the ‘Nuts and Bolts’ as many of the members were drawn from the ranks of skilled engineers in the railway works.[2] In 1931 the club moved to Essella Park.

[edit] Post-War history - Kent League to Southern League

After the war, Ashford Town finished as champions of the Kent League for 2 consecutive seasons 1947-48 and 1948-49. Ten years later in season 1958-59 they won the Kent Senior Cup. In the same season Ashford Town reached the FA Cup First Round proper as a Kent League side in 1958-59 losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace, in front of a ground record of 6,525 spectators. In the 1960's Ashford Town reached the first round of the FA Cup on four occasions, falling to football league sides every time. After the first Kent League was wound up in 1959, the following season Ashford Town joined Southern League Division One for the 1959-60 season. In the 1961-62 season in the FA Cup Ashford Town reached the 2nd Round but lost 0-3 to Queens Park Rangers. They won the Kent Senior Cup again in 1962-63. In season 1966-67 Ashford Town reached the 2nd Round of the FA Cup but lost 0-5 to Swindon Town. It wasn't until the end of the sixties though that they were promoted to the Southern League Premier Division in the 1969-70 season. However they were relegated back to Division One in 1971. In 1972-73 Ashford Town were FA Trophy semi-finalists, losing to Scarborough FC by a penalty. The following year Ashford Town finished third in the Southern League Division One when Alan Morton set a club record scoring 46 goals in 69 games, which still stands today.

[edit] Southern League Southern Division

In season 1979-80 the Southern League was re-organised into Southern & Midland Divisions (with no Premier Division) and Ashford Town were placed in the Southern League Southern Division. The Premier Division was re-introduced in season 1982-83. Their stay in the Southern Division lasted until the 1986-87 season when they finished Southern League Southern Division runners up and were promoted to the Premier Division. After only three seasons though they were relegated back to the Southern League Southern Division in 1990. As consolation they won the Kent Senior Cup for the third time in season 1992-93. Two seasons later in 1994-95 Ashford Town had a FA Cup run and after five qualifying rounds, they held Fulham from the Football League Third Division to a draw at home, only losing in the replay 3-5. In 1995-96 they were Southern League Southern Division runners-up and were promoted yet again back to the Premier Division. They also won the Kent Senior Cup for a fourth time. In the FA Cup, Ashford Town defeated Dagenham & Redbridge FC in the first round and then reached the second round but lost 0-5 away to Watford from the Football League Second Division. In the league the season ended poorly, with a finishing position of 18th and the club was only saved from relegation by the resignation of Sudbury Town FC. The yo-yo pattern continued though between the two divisions and in 1998 their two season stay ended with relegation back to the Southern Division.

[edit] Eastern & Isthmian Leagues

In season 1999-00 the Southern League Southern Division was renamed the Southern League Eastern Division. In season 2004-05 following league re-organisation Ashford Town joined the Isthmian League Division One but finished 20th of 22. [3] Former player Steve Lovell became manager at the beginning of November 2007. In season 2008-09 Ashford Town finished 8th in Isthmian League Division One.
