Area code 914 is a state of New York telephone area code. It follows exactly the boundaries of Westchester County, including the Hudson River. It was one of the original area codes established in October 1947. Until 2000, the 914 area code also served Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan, and Delaware counties, in addition to Westchester. However, due to the growing popularity and commercialization of cell phones and internet dial-up connections, 914 was split on June 5, 2000, with Westchester retaining 914, with the remainder getting 845. Cellular phones whose numbers were already established with the 914 area code before the split retained 914 as their area code, as well. In addition to the aforementioned counties, 914 also included Long Island's Nassau and Suffolk until the 516 area code was created in 1951. Since 2004, a block of numbers used by MCI has also been used in the Green Zone of Baghdad, Iraq to provide U.S. government officials and humanitarian workers access to "local" calls.[1] [edit] See also[edit] References[edit] External links
