Area code 906 is the telephone area code for the entire Upper Peninsula of Michigan, including the following cities:

It is among the least populous area codes in North America, serving only about 320,000 people. It was created as a split from 616 on Sunday, March 19, 1961, as a flash-cut, with no official permissive dialing.

906 was created because part of northern Michigan was threatening to secede,[1] either becoming part of Wisconsin, or create Superior, to be named after one of the Great Lakes. Despite dating from 1961, it is not expected to be exhausted until 2038. [1]
