Area code 860 is a telephone area code that covers the eastern and northwestern parts of Connecticut. The area code stretches along the eastern and northern borders as well as small portion of the western border. The boundary with area code 203 runs along (from West to East and then heading South starting with the City of Middletown) these 17 towns: Sherman, New Milford, Bridgewater, Roxbury, Washington, Morris, Watertown, Thomaston, Plymouth, Bristol, Southington, Berlin, Middletown, Middlefield, Durham, Killingworth, and Clinton; all of which are in 860 and border at least one and at most four towns (Watertown) in 203. Bridgewater, Roxbury (a part of which is in 203), Plymouth, Southington, Middlefield, and Durham all border two towns in 203; the remaining ten border one. The area code was created in 1995 to replace 203 when that area code was cut back to Fairfield County (except for the Town of Sherman), New Haven County, and the Towns of Bethlehem, Woodbury, and a small part of Roxbury in Litchfield County. [edit] Proposed area code overlayThe Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control, in August 1999, proposed an area code overlay for the 860 area code; the new area code was to be 959. This proposal was postponed for nearly a decade due to number conservation measures; in September 2008, it was announced that the 959 area code will overlay 860 within two years. In March 2009, it was announced that the 203/475 overlay will be activated on December 12, 2009, with the 860/959 overlay becoming active by 2011. Even though the 959 area code does not have a specific start date, all callers in Connecticut have to dial 10 digits beginning with the area code (the leading 1- not needed) effective November 14, 2009, to reach another Connecticut number, including one within the same area code.
