Area code 585 is a state of New York (USA) telephone area code and was created in 2002 for use in the city of Rochester, New York and surrounding areas. Previously 716 was used for the area now in 585. Area Code 716 was shared with Buffalo and much of western New York, until numbers in that area code became scarce. A few towns, including Arcade, Alden, and East Aurora, also have numbers in the 716 area.
