Area code 470 is a future North American Numbering Plan area code serving the state of Georgia. It covers metro Atlanta and will overlay the 678 area code. The 678 area code in turn is an overlay of both the 404 and 770 area codes. It was proposed on March 28, 2001 to provide additional numbers to the metropolitan Atlanta area,[1] but is not yet in service.
[edit] HistoryArea code 770 split from 404 in 1995. Later, 678 was overlayed on both 404 and 770. Area code 470 would be an overlay of 678, thus it would be an overlay of both 404 and 770, as well. [edit] StatusAs of 2008, the area code was active and assignable[2] but not yet utilized,[3] and the routing test number 470-666-7777 was removed from service. Whether this lack of utilization is due to lack of need or possible confusion with 404 and 770 is unknown. Because of Atlanta's expansive local calling area (reportedly the world's largest) with three active area codes, Atlantans often use a shorthand for area codes based on the first digit ("4" for 404, "6" for 678, and "7" for 770), which would make 470 (starting with "4" like 404, but otherwise similar to 770) difficult to incorporate. The "70" and the way that some people write the numeral 4 will also be problematic, as is the assignment of area code 478 to adjacent areas of central Georgia, especially since computer text often puts a slash or dot in the 0 to make it less confusing with letter O but likely to be misread as an 8.
