Area code FL.svg

The 407 Area code is the area code for the Orlando metro area including all of Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties, as well as small portions of Volusia and Lake counties. From 1947 until 1989, the 407 area code was part of the 305 area code, which included the east coast from Brevard County southward, including the Florida Keys. After the split, 407 included the former 305 area code from Palm Beach County northward, and the Orlando metro area. In 1996, Palm Beach, Martin, Indian River, and St. Lucie counties were split from the 407 Area code to form the 561 area code. The 561 area code has since split forming area code 772.

In October of 2000, the Brevard County portion of the area code became the 321 area code. Aside from the small portions of Volusia County (around Deltona, Florida) which remained exclusively in 407, the remainder of 407 (Orange, Osceola, and Seminole Counties) was overlaid with the new 321 area code. In 2003 it was announced that all new phone numbers in these three counties would no longer be issued a 321 area code, although current 321 numbers in the Orlando metro area would keep the 321 area code. Aside from the small portion of 407 in Volusia County, there is mandatory 10-digit dialing throughout the 407/321 area.

In 2001, the small portion of Volusia County (around Deltona, Florida) moved into Area code 386 when 386 was split from 904. All of 407 is now overlaid with 321.

Area code 689 has been allocated as a future overlay Area code, but it isn't certain when or how this may be implemented, although it is probable that the current 321 numbers in the Orlando area will all be shifted to the 689 area code, making the Orlando area a 407/689 overlay and 321 an exclusively Brevard County area code.
