203 is the North American telephone area code that covers the southwestern part of Connecticut. The area code stretches from its western border, along its southern coast, to beyond the city of New Haven, and ends just south of Hartford. (The rest of Connecticut is served by the 860 area code.) The boundary with area code 860 runs along (from East to West and then heading South starting with the City of Meriden) these 15 towns (excluding Roxbury): New Fairfield, Brookfield, Newtown, Southbury, Woodbury, a small part of Eastern Roxbury, Bethlehem, Middlebury, Waterbury, Wolcott, Cheshire, Meriden, Wallingford, North Branford, Guilford, and Madison; all of which are in 203 and border at least one and at most four towns (Meriden) in 860. Brookfield, Southbury, Woodbury, and Wallingford all border two towns; Bethlehem, Waterbury, Wolcott, and Madison all border three towns, and the remaining seven border one town in 860. The City of Meriden is notable as the only place in Connecticut where one can call towns in both the Hartford and New Haven Exchanges toll-free from a land-line phone. [edit] Area code overlayThe Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control, in August 1999, proposed an area code overlay for the 203 area code.[1] Area code 475 will go into effect on December 12, 2009. Even though area code 475 will overlay only area code 203, all callers in Connecticut (including those in area code 860) have to dial all calls with ten digits, effective November 14, 2009 [2]; this is due to the fact that when needed, an overlay of area code 959 on area code 860 will be implemented.
