Aqua Alexandrina crossing Viale Palmiro
Map of the Aqua Alexandrina outside of Rome
Map of the Aqua Alexandrina within Rome

The Aqua Alexandrina was a Roman aqueduct located in the city of Rome. It was constructed in AD 226 as the last of the ancient aqueducts in Rome. The Aqueduct was built under the reign of Emperor Alexander Severus to supply his enlargement of the Therme of Nero. Both the Theme and the Aqueduct have been renamed after Alexander. The Aqua Alexandrina received its water from a spring at the foot of the hill Sassobello, within a swamp Pantano Borghese near the city of Gabii, now a part of Monte Compatri. The same spring supplies the still-in-use medieval Acqua Felice from 1586. The first 6,4 km of the total 22,4 km were tunneled underground, later on the surface, and 2,4 km also on brick arches. The Aqueduct ended at Campus Martius at the Therme of Alexander, between the Pantheon and the Piazza Navona. The end of the Aqua Alexandrina was 50m above sea level. Depending on the season, the Aqueduct supplied 120.000 to 320.000 cubic meter of water per day.

Some of the arches are still standing today, crossing the busy Viale Palmiro north of Via Casilina in the district of Centocelle.
