An apodeme is an ingrowth of the arthropod exoskeleton which serves as an attachment site for muscles. These structures are composed of chitin, and approximately 50 times stiffer than vertebrate tendons. Similar to tendons, apodemes can stretch to store elastic energy for jumping, notably in locusts.
