[edit] Story

The game's protagonist is Ashley Mizuki Robbins, a 13 year old girl who has been raised by her aunt, Jessica, because her parents vanished when she was three years old. She believed that they were dead, but two days before her fourteenth birthday, she received a package. Inside, was a letter from her father and a small machine. The letter said that he would be waiting on Blood Edward Island, an island located off the coast of Washington in the United States. The next day, the day before her birthday, Jessica and Ashley ride over to Blood Edward Island on a boat, but Ashley's father isn't there to greet them. Jessica goes to look for him, but when she doesn't return, Ashley ventures out to search for both of them. While exploring the island, Ashley also befriends "D", a ghost who has lost his memories. Together they enter the Edward Mansion, each looking for answers to their own questions.

[edit] Gameplay

Players navigate in the game by using the bottom screen to move around while the top screen shows very artistic pre-rendered images of each area. Players use the touch screen and the microphone to solve a variety of puzzles.

[edit] DAS/DTS

The DAS, which stands for "Dual Another System" (also known as DTS or "Dual Trace System" in the North American version) is a mysterious handheld device that Ashley's father sent to her with the letter informing her that he was alive. It looks almost identical to an original Nintendo DS, with few cosmetic differences, similar to the Gameboy Horror featured in Luigi's Mansion for the GameCube. It has various functions:

  • Take, store and manipulate photos to solve clues.
  • Read DAS/DTS cards, which are small flash cards that store information. They are designed to look like Nintendo DS game cards.
  • Activate Another I (Trace I) and Another II (Trace II) at a later stage in the game.
  • View item information.
  • Load and save games.

[edit] Development

Another Code was developed by Cing and announced by Nintendo under the working title Another in early October 2004.[2] A playable version was first presented in November 2004 during the Nintendo World Japanese national Nintendo tour.[3] The Japanese release date of February 24, 2005 was confirmed by Nintendo at a retailer conference in Tokyo on January 13, 2005. It was still referred to as Another, but the title was changed to Another Code: Futatsu no Kioku until release.[4][5] The first Western release of Another Code was confirmed by Nintendo of Europe in late April 2005. The game was released as Another Code: Two Memories in Europe on June 24, 2005.[6] It was previously mentioned by Nintendo of America in release lists, but was not confirmed for the North American market until E3 2005, where it was showcased under the title Trace Memory.[7] The game was released by this name in North America on September 26, 2005.[8]

Ashley, the protagonist of Another Code, was originally intended to be 17 years old. She was designed by the game's director and character designer Taisuke Kanasaki. The character's appearance is supposed to appeal to both female and male players.[9]

[edit] Translation differences

Ann Lin of Nintendo of America's Product Development Department has stated that there are a few differences between the Japanese text and the North American release. Ashley is more skeptical in the North American text, and Lin stated that she thought that the original was "a little more accepting."[10] More humor was also included in the North American version.

In the international release, the Nintendo Europe and Nintendo of America translations differ in some respects, the former being closer to the original Japanese text.

[edit] Reception

Another Code received average to positive responses. It was praised for its creative use of the Nintendo DS hardware for puzzles, the graphics, and the characters, while criticism focused on the game's short length and mostly low difficulty. It currently has an aggregate rating of 73% on GameRankings and of 70 out of 100 on Metacritic.[11][12]

It was the 123rd best-selling game of 2005 in Japan, selling 105,452 copies.[13]

[edit] Legacy

A sequel titled Another Code: R - A Journey into Lost Memories for the Wii was released in Japan in February 2009, followed by a European release in June of the same year. The game's storyline takes places two years after that of its predecessor.[14][15]

In 2007, another adventure game for the Nintendo DS developed by Cing, Hotel Dusk: Room 215, was released internationally. Hotel Dusk includes references to Another Code, while Another Code: R references elements from Hotel Dusk.[16]

In the 2008 fighting game Super Smash Bros. Brawl, characters from Another Code make appearances in the form of stickers, as well as a trophy of Ashley, the main character.[17][18]
