Anna University Coimbatore was established on 1 February 2007 as a result of quadrafurcation of Anna University into four universities, namely, Anna University Chennai, Anna University Trichy, and Anna University Coimbatore and Anna University Thirunelveli. The Anna University Coimbatore is bestowed with powers to grant affiliations to colleges and universities conducting graduate and post graduate courses related to engineering, technology and management. Anna University Coimbatore through its Distance Education Arm Directorate od Online and Distance Education offers more than 40 degree programmes.

Centre for Research at Anna University Coimbatore offers Ph.D Programme (Internal/ External/ Lateral Entry/ Additional Ph.D/ Integrated/ Interdisciplinary) and M.Tech (By Research) Programme. Research is offered under various faculties of Engineering and Science. This centre provides research opportunities to the aspiring candidates serving in Educational Institutions/ Industries/ Research Organizations/ Research Laboratories and Government Departments. Currently, 2695 candidates have registered for Ph.D/ M.Tech (By Research) Programme around the globe. Centre for Research encourages the scholars to have collaborative projects with the University. Centre for research also introduces for the first time on-line entrance examination system for its Research admission process, on-line Doctoral Committee Meetings and for the course work examinations.
