The Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) is headed by a Chief of Staff who reports to the Minister of Defense. There are three components, the Army, Navy (Marinha de Guerra, MdG), and Air and Air Defense Forces (FAPA). Total manpower is about 65,000. The army is by far the largest of the services with about 55,000+ men and women.[2] The Navy numbers about 1,000 and operates several small patrol craft and barges. Air force personnel total about 3,500; its equipment includes Russian-manufactured fighters and transport planes. A small number of FAA personnel are stationed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Kinshasa) and the Republic of the Congo (Brazzaville). In 2005, FAPLA had a total of 90,000 active personnel of which the Army had 100,000 members, whose major equipment included over 300 main battle tanks, 600 reconnaissance vehicles, over 250 armored infantry fighting vehicles, 170 armored personnel carriers and more than 1,396 artillery pieces. In 1990-91, the Army had ten military regions and an estimated 73+ 'brigades', each with a mean strength of 1,000 and comprising inf, tank, APC, arty, and AA units as required (IISS Military Balance 1990 or 1991). The Navy had an estimated 2,400 personnel whose major naval units consisted of nine patrol/coastal vessels. The Air Force /Air Defense Forces had 6,000 personnel and 90 combat capable aircraft , including 22 fighters, 59 fighter ground attack aircraft and 16 attack helicopters. The defense budget in 2005 totalled $1.16 billion.
