John Angelo Poffo (born April 10, 1925) is a former professional wrestler and wrestling promoter, of Italian origin. He ran International Championship Wrestling for a number of years, holding cards in Tennessee, Kentucky and Arkansas. He is most noted for being the father of "Macho Man" Randy Savage and "Leaping" Lanny Poffo/The Genius. He also held the world sit up record for several years, his total being 6,033 in one sitting.
[edit] CareerPoffo started wrestling in 1948. He sometimes wrestled as The Masked Miser. Poffo wrestled in the 70's and 80's under a mask as "The Carpet Bagger" for Emile Dupre's legendary "Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling" in the Maritime Provinces of Canada. He wrestled under a yellow mask with a dollar sign on the forehead and a blue sequined ring jacket with a big dollar sign on the back. During his time in the Maritimes, his two sons, Randy "Macho Man" Savage & "Leaping" Lanny Poffo, were also major stars for Dupre's promotion. He formed a heel tag team with Chris Markoff, called "The Devil's Duo" and "The Graduates." He made a few appearances in WCW in 1995 managing his son, Randy Savage. He was once attacked by "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair, who put him in a Figure 4 leg lock. In 1995, he was inducted into the WCW Hall of Fame. Though his wrestling promotion was successful for years, some speculate that he was inducted as a favor to his son, Randy Savage. [edit] Personal lifePoffo's parents were Italian immigrants.[1] He married Judy on June 6, 1949. [edit] Championships and accomplishments
