[2] [edit] Film career[edit] Early successAngelika de la Cruz started her career in 1995 as a struggling singer. She went on to perform in different singing contests and eventually auditioned to sing the theme song of the canned cartoon series Sailor Moon. With the help of her father, who had knack for performing, she made it. That became her ticket to show business. At 15, de la Cruz landed a role in the sexy flick Nights of Serafina, where she played the sister of one of the leads. Her performance in the said movie gained her a Best New Actress Award from the Metro Manila Film Festival. Her success in acting was spotted by ABS-CBN who cast her in their top-rated soap opera Mara Clara alongside Judy Ann Santos. After her stint in Mara Clara, the station gave her a more challenging role in Esperanza, which also starred Judy Ann Santos. In the series, she was paired with Jericho Rosales, who became her on and off screen lover. Their love team was accepted by the viewers as reason why ABS-CBN made them a regular in the teen horror series Oka Tokat and cast them as one of the leads in the horror movie Magandang Hatinggabi. Dela Cruz, whose main passion is singing, made two albums under BMG Records and one album under Imperial Records, which succeeded in selling her album in Japan. She also made several movies from different movie outfits and was featured in different commercials. [3] [edit] Moving to GMA NetworkAfter being with ABS-CBN for quite some time, dela Cruz decided to transfer to GMA Network. She was able to show her craft in acting when she appeared in different telesine and mini-series such as Liwanag sa Hatinggabi and Umulan Man O Umaraw. She became part of the TV show Pintados and had a supporting role in the soap opera entitled Di Ba't Ikaw. Following the success of her first primetime series, Dela Cruz was cast to star in another primetime series Habang Kapiling Ka along with then-boyfriend Victor Neri. Her performance in the series gave her a Best Actress nomination in Star Awards for Television but she lost it to fellow co-star Snooky Serna. Dela Cruz was able to show her singing, dancing and hosting talent when she became a regular in the Sunday variety show SOP. [4] [edit] Back to ABS-CBNAfter her contract with GMA 7 expired, Dela Cruz moved back to her first home studio ABS-CBN. Many writers and critics questioned her decision in switching channels but she simply answered them by saying that it was a career move. Her comeback project as a Kapamilya was the primetime series Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas which starred Kristine Hermosa, Diether Ocampo and her ex-flame Jericho Rosales. In the series, she played a comic yet talented young lady who finds herself falling inlove to Jericho Rosales's character. Her performance in the series was well-applauded by the viewers and critics saying that she brought fun, laughter and tears to the series. The show became a success after her role and Diether Ocampo's role added twist in the story. It was very popular in Malaysia. After the success of Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas, Dela Cruz refrained from drama and concentrated in hosting. She did hosting jobs in the showbiz-oriented talk show Entertainment Konek, Morning Star, 2004 Himig Handog Love Songs and ASAP Mania which is the rival show of SOP. Following these, she was cast as one of the leads in the series Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin, where she was able to work with other Star Magic's brightest talent such as Diether Ocampo, John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo and Claudine Barretto. Dela Cruz' career took a different direction when she accepted the role of Lavinia Arguelles, the main antagonist in the television remake of the movie Bituing Walang Ningning where she starred along with Sarah Geronimo. She was able to show not just her skills in acting but also in singng. She was praised for her performance in the series and gave her a Best Actress nomination at the 2007 Star Awards for Television. [5] After the success of Bituing Walang Ningning and her effectiveness in playing anti-heroine characters, Dela Cruz was cast in villainous roles. She starred in the fantasy series Pedro Penduko at ang mga Engkantao where she played the role of Kalagua, the ultimate evil and the afternoon series Prinsesa ng Banyera as the ambitious twin sister of Kristine Hermosa. [6] [edit] Back to GMAIn 2008, Dela Cruz transferred back to GMA Network after finishing the first season of Prinsesa ng Banyera. Her loyalty was questioned because of switching channels; however, she managed to address the issue by saying that her loyalty is in the network she works with and that she just wanted to work. [7]. She made a comeback via Babangon Ako't Dudurugin Kita which featured the loveteam of JC de Vera and Yasmien Kurdi with longtime friend Marvin Agustin. It was followed by the afternoon drama Una Kang Naging Akin where she starred with Maxene Magalona and Wendell Ramos. The series was a consistent top rater in the afternoon slot. [8] After the success of her afternoon drama, GMA got her to star in the Philippine version of LaLola starring Rhian Ramos. In the series, she played the role of Sabrina Starr, the ex-girlfriend of Rhian's love interest. [9] After her absences due to giving her birth to a new baby boy, she will return onscreen via her second Drama soap opera via Sine Novela, Kaya Kong Abutin Ang Langit which she will work with Iza Calzado. Dela Cruz will play a good sister of Calzado's role. [edit] Turned-down projectsAfter Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas ended with huge success, Dela Cruz was offered different projects from ABS-CBN and also from its rival network, GMA. Dela Cruz was offered to be the leading lady of her then-boyfriend Jericho Rosales in the TV series Panday but she had to turn down the role because of her commitment in the series Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin. The role was given to Heart Evangelista. [10] After the series with Claudine Barretto, rumors occurred that Dela Cruz will be joining the cast of Panday in its second season but it just remained a rumor. [3] While doing Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin, Dela Cruz was offered to play the part of Alena in GMA 7's Encantadia. However, she had to turn down the role because of her existing contract to ABS-CBN. The role went to Karylle instead. [11] She also turned down the role of Pacita in the series Super Inggo which was given to Angelu de Leon. In 2007, Dela Cruz was about to be part of the series Ysabella which stars Judy Ann Santos, but she turned down the role because she would like to refrain from doing villainous characters. She also denied the issue that the reason why she did not accept the role was because she doesn't want to work with Judy Ann Santos. Desiree Del Valle was hired to replace her. [12] Dela Cruz was about to play a leading role in the television remake of Lastikman but dropped out at its last minute because her then-manager Boy Abunda felt like it is not the right role for her. This was the reason why Iya Villania was cast in the role. [13] She was also asked to do a commercial for White Castle Brandy which she also turned down because she refused to wear bikini for the said commercial. Roxanne Guinoo was hired to do the commercial. [14] Aside from television series, Dela Cruz also turned down different movie offers which require her to sexy roles. [edit] Filmography[edit] Movies

[edit] Lawsuit Against BMG RecordsOn March 17, 1995, Angelika (Ma. Lourdes Egger dela Cruz in real life) signed a contract with BMG under which she was required to record at least two albums over three years. But Dela Cruz only recorded one album during the period so BMG exercised on March 23, 1998 its option to extend the contract for two more years. She was required to record one album, which she was able to do. Despite the expiration of the option period, on May 8, 2000, BMG informed her she still had to record one album under the option period. On June 5, 2001, Dela Cruz sued and asked for damages, claiming that after recording one album BMG never gave her any proposal for a second one and that despite the lapse of the option period, the firm refused to release her on the ground that she still had to record one album. The RTC found merit in Dela Cruz’ petition, awarding her payment for damages, and the payment of royalties for the unfulfilled number of required songs under the agreement but BMG appealed the case and CA ruled in Dela Cruz’ favor. However, CA deleted the lower court’s award to Dela Cruz of P1.5 million in actual damages, P200,000 in moral damages, another P200,000 in exemplary damages, as well as P50,000 in attorney’s fees. The CA said there was no evidence to support the award of actual, moral and exemplary damages. And since both parties have legitimate claims to each other, CA said the award of attorney’s fees was not warranted. [19] [edit] Endorsements
