Andrés Cabrero (born January 4, 1989 in Guaynabo) is a Puerto Rican soccer player who currently plays for Puerto Rico Islanders in the USL First Division.
[edit] Career[edit] Youth and CollegeCabrero played in the Puerto Rican amateur leagues until age 15, excelling as an attacking midfielder for Conquistadores de Guaynabo. He participated in soccer summer camps at Duke University, Clemson University and the University of South Florida and, following an invitation from an elite team from Atlanta, decided to continue his development in the United States. He played club soccer Cobb FC, where he won the South East Championship in 2005, and was included as player on the Georgia 89' Olympic development program (ODP) team during his three years in Georgia. He attended South Cobb High School, playing on the varsity soccer team in both his sophomore and junior years. During his time with the Georgia ODP team he scored one goal and made an assist in a victory over the Mexican youth national team, and played in th team which England's Liverpool team in a friendly held in Atlanta in 2007. After winning the Regional State Championship with the Georgia team, he participated in the National Championship, winning third place after an overtime loss to Illinois. Cabrero was also included in the US ODP Region III team under coach Wolfgang Suhnholz in 2005 and 2006. With the Region III team he played at the Region Nationals in Chula Vista, California, and at the Mexican International Festival held at Guadalajara, Mexico, where he participated in victories over Chivas and Tecos and in a loss against Atlas. Cabrero played one year of college soccer at Georgia Southern University, but decided to pursue a professional career in the sport after his freshman year . [edit] ProfessionalCabrero signed with the Puerto Rico Islanders of the USL First Division in April 2008, and made six appearances for the team in his debut season. He also spent time on loan with Puerto Rican side Sevilla FC Puerto Rico. [edit] InternationalCabrero played for the Puerto Rico U-20 team in qualifying games for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, and made his debut for the senior Puerto Rican national football team in 2008, and scored his first international goal on January 16, 2008 in a 2-0 win over Bermuda. He also played in all three of Puerto Rico's qualifying games for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.[1][2][3] [edit] PersonalCabrero is the son of Antonio "Super" Cabrero and Maria Gomez.
