André Deutsch (15 November 1917 Budapest, Hungary – 11 April 2000) was a British publisher. His publishing career began during the Second World War at the publishing firm Nicholson and Watson. After the War he started his first company Allan Wingate which survived for five years. André Deutsch Limited started trading in 1952.[1] His small but influential publishing house ran until the 1980s, and included books by Jack Kerouac, Earl Lovelace, Norman Mailer, V. S. Naipaul, Ogden Nash, Andrew Robinson, Philip Roth, Art Spiegelman, John Updike, Margaret Atwood, Charles Gidley Wheeler and Helene Hanff, and is now an imprint of Carlton Publishing Group. Deutsch employed dedicated editor Diana Athill. Potential confusion can arise between André Deutsch and Arnold Deutsch, due to the fact that André Deutsch was the British publisher of The Philby Conspiracy ISBN 0-345-29726-1, by the investigative journalist Bruce Page. André Deutsch is mentioned in the book as its British publisher. Arnold Deutsch was revealed to be Kim Philby's recruiter and controller, but is not mentioned in the book. Deutsch died on 11 April 2000, aged 82. His company is now an imprint of Carlton Publishing Group. [edit] See also
