Anderson Secondary School

Anderson Secondary School is a co-educational government school in Ang Mo Kio, Singapore, covering Secondary 1 to Secondary 5 (usually ages 12 to 17). It became an autonomous school[clarification needed] in 1994 and was one of the pioneer autonomous schools in Singapore.

Anderson Secondary has been recognised for excellence in both education processes and outcomes, being awarded the School Distinction Award by the Ministry of Education in 2004.[1] It also received the Singapore Quality Class Award in 2002 and the Best Practice Award for Staff Well-being in 2003.

Anderson Secondary has been a Band 1 school[clarification needed] since 2006.[2]

[edit] History

The school was founded in 1960 as a girls' primary school. In 1964 it became Anderson Girls' Secondary School, and in 1965 began admitting boys. The school has occupied several sites; it was on Anderson Road but in 1984 moved to Ang Mo Kio Street 44. In December 1993 it moved to its current location, Ang Mo Kio Street 53.

Anderson Secondary School has been used from time to time for educational experiments. In 1994 it was declared an autonomous school, and in 1996 it was one of the first schools to use the Students-and-Teachers Workbench project. In 1997 it was chosen as an IT demo school.

The principal who helped the School to get the Singapore Quality Class award was Chan Khah Gek.

The former school vision "Caring and Responsible Leaders of Tomorrow" was changed to "An Institution of Distinction to Inspire and Serve" in 2003.

In 2007, the school underwent a Vision Mission Statement review, under the leadership of Mrs Poh Mun See. After the review, the school concluded that the vision, mission and values statement remained relevant for the next ten years.

[edit] Emblem and motto

The school's emblem is the bamboo, meant to symbolise greatness, nobility, distinction, purity, and humility. The school's motto, With Constancy and Purpose, is also related to the bamboo, which is versatile, hardy and unyielding.

[edit] Events in Anderson

Events include the ANDnovation Carnival, cross country, Sports Carnival, Speech Day and the Arts Festival.

Student-initiated events hosted in Anderson, mainly under the auspices of the Student Council (ASC), include a fund-raising carnival, Anderson Cultural Project, and the March/April Games.

Most intra-school events are played at the class level, where students compete in events for their classes. This is done instead of inter-house competition to encourage greater bonding within classes.

[edit] Old Andersonian Alumni Society

The Old Andersonian Alumni Society ("OAAS") was set up in 1999. With the help of the school, a temporary Committee was first formed in November 1998 to spearhead the formation and setting-up of an Alumni association. Some twenty ex-Andersonians came forward to help plan and execute the launch of the OAAS.

The main objectives of the OAAS are to provide an organisation for ex-Andersonians to interact and reconnect with one another as well as with their Alma Mater.

[edit] PRIME upgrading

From 2003 to 2006 the school underwent a PRIME upgrading project. The school had raised funds for non-standard facilities such as a student activity hub, a heritage centre and a multi-purpose studio. It also upgraded the lecture theatre and classrooms and added a new five-storey building.

The final stage of the upgrading process took place in 2005. Some facilities, such as the school hall, cookery rooms and the football field, were ready in July 2006. The school library has been given a new zen-style layout.

A special facility called the "INSPIRE TOWN" was officially opened in 2005. This is a room where innovation and creativity is encouraged amongst pupils. Two classrooms were converted into a Black Box for use by drama students.

In 2008, an indoor sports hall was opened.

[edit] Uniform and discipline

Girls wear a white blouse and a blue knee-length pinafore. Lower secondary boys wear white short trousers. Upper secondary boys wear white long trousers. All students wear the school badge, with their name tag below it. Students wear the school tie on Mondays, and at formal school functions.

There is a "list of major offences" including truancy, skipping lessons, cheating, defiance, bullying, vandalism, theft, fighting and smoking. Boys who commit any of these offences receive corporal punishment in the form of caning. In the most serious cases, they are caned in front of the other students (known as "public caning"). Girls are never caned at Anderson and must attend detention class instead if they carry out any of these acts.[4]
