[edit] Corinthians

Anderson started playing professional football for Corinthians, one of São Paulo's major football clubs. He played at the team for five consecutive seasons, moving to Portugal in the middle of his 6th season. At Corinthians, Anderson conquered the First FIFA World Club Championship (2000) a Brazilian Championship title (in 2005), the Brazilian Cup (in 2002), the São Paulo State Championship (in 2001 and 2003) and the Rio-São Paulo Tournament (in 2002).

Anderson was brought to SL Benfica at the beginning of the 2005/2006 season. He played the whole 90 minutes for SL Benfica in the team's first Portuguese Superliga match of the season, against Académica in Coimbra, on August 20, 2005. He quickly gained his place in the team's starting eleven, with Ronald Koeman (at the time managing the Portuguese side) playing him in the center of the defense, alongside Brazilian team mate Luisão. So far, Anderson has won only one tournament for Benfica: the Portuguese Supercup (in 2005/2006).

The Brazilian player has stated more than once that he would like to leave Benfica because the team's manager, Fernando Santos, does not play him where he likes the most: the left-center side of the defense (Luisão's position). Anderson says, "if I had played in my position, I would surely had demonstrated everything I did at Corinthians and that eventually got me in the Brazilian National Team". This is subject to debate and is subjective. He also said: "It's a situation that I respect because Luisão represents a lot to Benfica and to its supporters, but it's complicated for me because, if I have to play, I have to do it on the other side. Even if I am on the top of my form, I will never achieve the level I can when playing in my natural position"[1]. Struggling with his son's illness[2], Anderson has expressed his will to return to Brazil and has been suspended by Benfica for missing an international pre-season match in Romania[3]. The central defender is reportedly negotiating a move to Cruzeiro [4]. [5] Benfica was asking for 3 million euros for the transfer, but Cruzeiro's president refused to pay that much, saying that Anderson, despite being a good player, "is not a star. For example, he's not even in the Brazil National Team".

He never really took off at Benfica, where competition was high, with Brazilian international Luizao relegating Anderson to occasional appearances only.

His agent linked with Turkish Champion Fenerbahçe about transfer deals on August 18 [6].

Despite his alleged need to return to Brazil due to his son's illness,[7] Anderson ended up moving to the French side Lyon in a 3 million euro deal.[8]

He recently transferred to São Paulo FC.

Anderson's only cap for the Brazilian national team was against Guatemala on April 27, 2005, in which he scored the match's first goal at the 4th minute as Brazil won 3–0.
