American Solutions for Winning the Future is a conservative 527 group created by former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Newt Gingrich and which claims as its purpose the mutual engagement of citizens and elected officials in a dialogue intended to synthesize and propose solutions to problems affecting American society. Republican Tom DeLay said of the organization,"[it is] not in sync with the base of the party... take his whole American Solutions idea. I'm very skeptical about finding solutions for government. Government is the problem, not the solution."[1] Minimal government appears to be among its ends, however, as Gingrich hosted a teleconference through the group "on how to transform government from bloated bureaucracy to lean machine."[1]
[edit] BackgroundThe American Solutions movement was officially launched with an opening presentation on September 27, 2007 before a standing-room only crowd at the Cobb Galleria Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Then, on September 29, 2007, American Solutions held more than 2,000 workshops in all 50 states during the inaugural Solutions Day. [edit] Drill Here. Drill Now. Pay Less.Currently their main program is Drill Here. Drill Now. Pay Less. A petition aims to convince Congress that Americans, including representatives from both major parties as well as Independents, want them to open oil drilling in Alaska's Wildlife Reserve and off the Atlantic, Pacific and Florida Gulf coasts, and to extract shale oil from the Rocky Mountains, in order to make the country independent from foreign oil. As of August 20, 2008 over 1,450,000 citizens have signed.[2] South Carolina Republican Party chairman Katon Dawson was the first state party chair to endorse the campaign.[3] On September 27, 2008, Congress voted to lift the ban on offshore drilling.[2] [edit] References
