[edit] Plot synopsis

The story begins in the back of a hill, located in a forest during the summer. Three chipmunks (named Alvin, Simon and Theodore) are singing the song "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter. Then, begin to complain about their food reserve when Alvin accidentally empty your pantry, since the tank was full and the squirrel had thrown through a hole, causing all the nuts flying through the air. Alvin complains about her own life and even calls his tree "stupid", then the tree is cut down (with the unfortunate trio in the same). While the trunk falls and squirrels are agitated, they think that Alvin had made the tree angry. The tree is standing on a truck and taken to a city to become a Christmas tree. Meanwhile, the composer David "Dave" Seville sends one of his songs to the label JETT, but is rejected by one of its executive, Ian Hawke, who says he hates Dave's latest song. When he left the label, Dave steals a basket of muffins. The squirrels and the tree, meanwhile, end up on the receipt of the record company Jett. Alvin, Simon and Theodore manage to escape the tree and enter the basket Dave. When Dave gets home, throws the basket in the trash can and begins to throw all his compositions through the door. The squirrels decide to hide in cupboards. When Dave discovers them, he begins to want to crush them with a spatula. Dave Alvin is attacked and does catch it, but the squirrel escapes.

The Chipmunks and Dave finally loses consciousness cause by throwing a glass jar filled with popcorn on his head. Then, begin to worry, because Dave did not awake, but when it does, holds the squirrels and starts to clean. Soon after, he's surprised to hear them sing. Decides to make a deal with them would leave to stay, eat and watch TV if you sing to him, and also, if they did not bring any animal into the house. Simon says they did not associate with other animals. After negotiating the deal, Dave Alvin reminded that he had left all his musical equipment outside the house, so it will look.

Dave them a bed to the squirrels in a chair, while they sleep, their snores are transformed into a song, awakening creativity Dave. Having regained his musical equipment, write a Christmas song ("The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Do not Be Late)"). Then during the night, he composes music. In the morning, when the Chipmunks are trying to catch a burnt toast and Simon tries to eat it, it falls in front of him, but fails to see it. Dave realizes that the squirrel is short sighted, so that gives a pair of glasses, which solves the problem.

Dave then returned to the label JETT to show Ian what he had found three singing chipmunks Christmas song as its background. Although the Chipmunks sing the song perfectly, suffer stage fright and refuse to sing. Dave is fired from the company again. In the car ride back to Dave's official job, the squirrels will say they felt only shame. Dave's not heed them. When I finally get to work, you discover that the squirrels had drawn uncomfortable images all over the place, causing him fired. Dave becomes angry at his house and is very upset with the squirrels.

Theodore then Dave reminds you of an appointment with his girlfriend, Claire. Alvin thinks he can help Dave with his appointment, lowering the lights, putting romantic songs in the CD and lighting the fire in the fireplace, but accidentally ends up separating Dave and Claire. When Dave admits that his life was being sabotaged by talking chipmunks, Claire does not believe him and leaves.

The Chipmunks, upset at the fact that Dave is angry with them, trying to fix by going to Ian's mansion to sing the Christmas song, after which Ian replied "Welcome to Jett label. While shopping with squirrels, Dave gets angry at them for going to Ian's mansion without notice, and, as punishment, prohibits them stay up after nine o'clock at night. He admits he does not have much money, after squirrels put large amounts of toast in the shopping cart. At that point, his Christmas song begins to play on the radio in the store. Then Ian called by telephone to Dave, and returns your work.

On Christmas Eve, Theodore tells Dave that he had a nightmare, so she wants to sleep with him. Dave says, "Okay, but sleeps on the other side of the bed." Then, Theodore is seen sleeping in Dave's head.

The next morning, Alvin and Simon wake up Dave and Theodore to exchange gifts. Simon gives Dave a clip made by himself, Alvin his own wallet (because he wanted to give something you use every day), and Theodore a card with images of pineapples in it, which represented the four of them as a family . Despite this, Dave clarified that they are just friends. Suddenly, Ian enters the house dressed as Santa Claus and carrying a bag full of gifts, which happen to be toys for the squirrels, who began to call him Uncle Ian.

When the squirrels give their first concert (in which they sing Witch Doctor), are separated from Dave by Ian, who tells them that could be very good artists if they were with him instead of with the composer. Moreover, he tells them that Dave called them "rats" behind them, when in fact he did that was Ian. That night, Theodore discovers a letter that Dave had written after a disastrous dinner with Claire, asking the squirrels to leave. Sad, Dave decided to leave and go live with Ian, who's full of gifts but makes them work it out. Simon also gives new glasses, even though the squirrel can not see well with them (after which Ian says "Your eyes will get used").

While recording the song "Get Munk'd" in the study, the squirrels get tired of singing both end up falling to sleep. Ian believes that caffeine may help. Therefore, given coffee, after which they feel well enough to sing, but who drink too much, being disoriented. Simon manages to take the microphone and starts to swing in all directions, before it struck the glass of the window.

Ian does not allow Theodore to sleep with him when he has a nightmare (as had Dave), and also tells him that he also had a nightmare, but that was not completed upon awakening, and that he was still touring with the "pesky squirrels.

The Chipmunks start a tour from coast to coast. Before the next concert, Simon finds his old pair of glasses and joins the new pair had given Ian. Then, put the old pair and adjusts it slightly. Ian does not seem to realize that Simon had gone back to using their old glasses.

At the concert in Los Angeles, a doctor said that the squirrels could not sing because their voices were very tired. Ian, who did not want to stop earning money and tells them to move the lips instead of singing (which Simon says it's "cheating"). The squirrels are convinced that Dave does not want him back when Ian tells them that Dave had called to say he was doing very well, but I could not go to the concert because I was busy. Dave, however, manages to enter the concert of the Chipmunks. The security officers are trying to take Dave's place, but the squirrels are able to hear it. Then, fire Ian speaking, making the audience realize they were doing playback and begin to fill with trash the stage. Alvin's last words to Ian Hawke were "You, Uncle Ian! Kiss my furry cheeks!". Dave warns Ian, saying that since that since the Chipmunks ruined the concert, everyone would know its fake, and his popularity declined. The security officers cornered the squirrels and Ian encase them in a cage, placing them near some dolls of themselves, as he quickly tries to escape on a flight to Paris for the next concert of the squirrels. Ian runs along with the cage to his car and start driving. Dave follows him, trying to save the squirrels. Then the car slows down and gets to catch the Chipmunks cage separating the self from Ian. Finally, the squirrels returned to him after the man accepts it is a family, and after allowing them to scratch the car, honk the horn and up and down the windows. Later, Ian looks into the cage and is amazed to find it just stuffed animals instead of squirrels. As Ian's car disappears into the horizon, it is heard shouting "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!".

Dave finally gets home and the next morning, he sees that the Chipmunks had prepared breakfast for him and Claire. Alvin tries to get the cork on a bottle of cider. When it does, all the liquid is poured from the vessel in which it serves. Dave's patience is tested, so he decides to "say no". The fluid blasting the wiring of the house, causing a blackout. Dave decides to "speak" and shouts "AL-VINN !!!!!!!!!" Alvin responds with "OK!"

At the beginning of the end credits, Ian tries to sing like squirrels do while playing the keyboard, but fails.

Finally, there is a sign that says "No squirrels were harmed in making this film."

[edit] Critical reception

The film was not well received by most critics, receiving only a 26% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes classifying it as "Rotten"[3], and a 39 out of 100 at Metacritic, indicating "generally negative reviews".[4]

Variety magazine called the film a "harmless and frequently humorous trifle that might be a potent B.O. performer, if only by default, during a holiday season surprisingly short on kidpics" and noted that "homevid prospects are huge";[5] the home video prediction later proved to be accurate. Roger Ebert gave it two stars out of four, saying it is "about as good as a movie with these characters can probably be...at some level, the movie may even be doing something satirical about rock stars and the hype machine."[6] The critics for The Guardian and The Observer were split, with Philip French saying its a "film that kids will love and adults will find tolerable" and Peter Bradshaw giving it one star out of five and calling it a "thoroughly brain-dead semi-animated family comedy".[7]

[edit] Box office

Alvin and the Chipmunks was released in North America on December 14, 2007. Despite negative reviews, the film grossed a surprising $44,307,417 in 3,475 theaters its opening weekend averaging to about $12,750 per venue, and placing second at the box office behind I Am Legend, with nearly sold out showings.[8] According to Box Office Guru, the first weekend was twice as much as Fox originally expected. Its second weekend was $28,179,556, behind National Treasure: Book of Secrets and I Am Legend. On its third weekend, it surpassed I Am Legend for #2 at the box office, still behind National Treasure: Book of Secrets.

The film closed on Thursday June 5, 2008, making $217,326,974 domestically and $141,560,622 overseas for a total of $358,887,596 worldwide, making it a huge commercial success considering the film's modest $55 million budget.[8] The sustained box-office success of the film surprised 20th Century Fox; Elizabeth Gabler of Fox 2000 told the Los Angeles Times "I look at the numbers every day, and we just laugh."[9] Given its budget, Alvin was far more profitable than either I Am Legend or National Treasure: Book of Secrets.[9] According to MTV, it also has become the highest-grossing talking animal/live-action cartoon adaptation to date. It is also 20th Century Fox's highest grossing film domestically to be released in 2007.[1]
