Allmendingen bei Bern is a municipality in the district of Konolfingen in the canton of Berne in Switzerland.
[edit] HistoryAllmendingen is first mentioned in 1256 as Alwandigen under the control of Rudolf von Alwandingen.[1] Until the end of 1992, Allmendingen was a part of Rubigen, which it separated from on January 1, 1993 to become a separate municipality. [edit] GeographyAllmendingen has an area of 3.8 square kilometers (1.5 sq mi). Of this area, 68.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 21.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 7.4% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (2.6%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[2] It is located in the southern suburbs of Bern between Rubigen and Muri bei Bern. It includes the village of Allmendingen and the hamlet of Märchligen. Allmendingen belongs to the parish of Münsingen. [edit] DemographicsAllmendingen has a population (as of 2007[update]) of 494, of which 5.7% are foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -11.6%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (95.2%), with French being second most common ( 1.4%) and English being third ( 1.4%). In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 43.7% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the FDP (18.4%), the SPS (12.8%) and the Green Party (8.3%). The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0-19 years old) make up 20.4% of the population, while adults (20-64 years old) make up 65.9% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 13.7%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Allmendingen about 87.9% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule). Allmendingen has an unemployment rate of 1.11%. As of 2005[update], there were 53 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 14 businesses involved in this sector. 74 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 2 businesses in this sector. 56 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 12 businesses in this sector.[2] The historical population is given in the following table:[1]
