Alexandre Tanguay (born November 21, 1979) is a professional ice hockey player, currently playing for the Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL. Tanguay was acquired by the Lightning as a free agent in a 2.5 million dollar deal on August 29, 2009. He previously played for the Montreal Canadiens, the Calgary Flames, and the Colorado Avalanche. He has won a Stanley Cup in 2001 as a member of the Avalanche, with whom he was originally drafted 12th overall in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

Tanguay, who alternates between left wing and centre, was drafted 12th overall in the first round of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche (formerly the Quebec Nordiques, his favorite team growing up). Tanguay started playing for the Avalanche in 1999–00 after three seasons of major junior with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He scored his first NHL goal on October 8, 2000 against the Pittsburgh Penguins and finished with 51 points in his rookie season.

After improving to 77 points in his second campaign, he added 21 points in the post-season to help the Avalanche to the 2001 Stanley Cup championship. In the Finals against the New Jersey Devils, Tanguay scored a goal in game six to help tie the series 3–3 with a 4–0 victory. In the resulting game seven, Tanguay scored the opening two goals and assisted the third in Colorado's 3–1 victory. His second goal end up as the determining Stanley Cup-winning goal.^[1]

Tanguay remained with the Avalanche for six seasons total, including a one-season stint with HC Lugano of the Swiss National League A due to the 2004–05 NHL lockout. On June 24, 2006, during the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Tanguay was traded from the Avalanche to the Calgary Flames for Jordan Leopold, a second-round pick (Codey Burki), and a 2007 second-round pick (Trevor Cann).^[2] He recorded a career-high 81 points in his first season with the Flames, but fell to 58 points in 2007–08.

On June 20, 2008, during the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Tanguay waived his no-trade clause and was dealt to the Montreal Canadiens, along with a fifth-round pick in 2008 (Maxim Trunev), in exchange for the 25th overall pick (Greg Nemisz) and a second-round pick in 2009.^[3][4] In the midst of his first season with the Canadiens, he suffered a shoulder injury on December 30, 2008 after taking a hit from Evgeny Artyukhin of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

On August 29, 2009, Tanguay was reported to have agreed a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning, pending a physical.^[5] The Lightning confirm they have agreed to a deal in principle.
