Alexander Gregor Pennie, or Pennie is lead vocalist of Welsh indie electro pop band Decimals. Pennie was previously in Welsh band The Automatic, where he provided backing vocals as well as playing synthesizers and keyboards for the act. Pennie left The Automatic in late 2007. Alex is recognizable for his high pitched vocals and screaming he provided in The Automatic; however, since working with Decimals, he mainly provides melodic vocals.[1]
[edit] Biography[edit] Musical careerPennie joined The Automatic when the band re-branded themselves (having originally been known as White Rabbit). He provided vocals and keyboard parts for the album Not Accepted Anywhere as well as all the B-sides released during that time period, Pennie also had lead vocal responsibilities for tracks "Gold Digger" originally by Kanye West and "Epic" originally by Faith No More. In early 2007 Pennie had expressed his desire to leave the band[2], saying he felt undervalued and was finding the whole experience increasingly unenjoyable; however, he agreed to complete live commitments for the promotional run of Not Accepted Anywhere, which ended in August 2007 at Get Loaded In The Park 2007. This was the band's final performance with Pennie, before they went to the studio to begin work on This Is A Fix, to which Pennie contributed on the original versions of "Steve McQueen" and "Revolution" (now known as "Secret Police"). On 18 September 2007 it was announced that Pennie was no longer part of The Automatic, and the following statement was issued: Alex Pennie, who's been in The Automatic since 2003, played his last gigs with the band at the recent Get Loaded In The Park festival (25-26 August) and has left after due to finding the last year increasingly unenjoyable and growing apart from the rest of the band.[3][4] After leaving the band Pennie moved for a short time to the US where he was supposedly working with a new punk band. However, months later his new project was announced: an indie-electro band Decimals, for which Pennie provides lead vocals. The band have signed a deal with B-Unique and are expected to be releasing music at some point in 2009.[5] [edit] Notable appearances Alex Pennie & Frank Carter Pennie was on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, on 23 November 2006. On 9 January 2007 Pennie and former band mate Robin Hawkins stood in for Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1. Pennie has, on several occasions, performed with Gallows live, both on the Warped Tour and South By Southwest festival, as well as during live shows and various interviews. Carter has often slated The Automatic.[6][7] [edit] Equipment[edit] DiscographyPennie had been working with the band up until his split on new material. He also took part in the original recording of single "Steve McQueen"; however as to whether this version of the song will ever be released remains unknown. With The Automatic
