Alan White (born 22 March 1976 in Darlington, England) is an English professional footballer who plays for Luton Town as a defender. He has made over 400 appearances in the Premier League and The Football League.

[edit] Career

White began his career as a trainee at Middlesbrough in 1995,[1] and made his debut in a 3–3 draw against Liverpool in August 1996.[2] He made two further appearances in the Premier League against Chelsea in August 1996 and against Sheffield Wednesday in March 1997,[2] before joining Luton Town in September 1997 for a fee of £40,000, where he made over 80 league appearances in three seasons.[1] He had a one-month loan spell with Colchester United in December 1999[1] and later joined Colchester on a free transfer in July 2000.[3]

White made 166 appearances for Colchester in four seasons, scoring four goals, and was voted player of the year in the 2003–04 season.[4] He rejected the offer of a new contract with the U's and instead joined Leyton Orient in June 2004 on a two-year deal.[5] However, he was allowed to leave nine months later and joined Boston United in March 2005 on a one-year contract, with Boston manager Steve Evans stating, "I'm delighted to get Alan on board. He was outstanding for Colchester United last season and is a great competitor."[6]

At the end of his Boston contract in June 2006, White joined Notts County on a free transfer,[7] where he was made club captain.[8] Nine months later, he joined Peterborough United on loan for the remainder of the 2006–07 season[8] and then was one of six players released by Notts County at the end of the season[9].

White joined his hometown club Darlington on 15 May 2007.[10] By the end of the 2008–09 season, White had made 85 league and cup appearances for Darlington.[1] Darlington entered administration in February 2008, and White was told he would be free to leave the club at the end of the season.[11] He subsequently re-joined Luton Town on a two-year contract on 8 June 2009.[12]
