Al-Qādisiyyah (in Arabic: القادسية) is one of the provinces of Iraq. It is in the center of the country. Its capital is ad-Diwāniyyah. Before 1976, it was part of the ad-Diwāniyyah Province, along with al-Muthannā Governorate and Najaf Governorate. The governor of this province, Khalil Jalil Hanza, was killed by a roadside bomb on 11 Aug 2007, apparently by local insurgents. The province's police chief, Major General Khalid Hassan, and three other security personnel were also killed in the same attack. [1] [edit] Provincial Government
[edit] HistoryThe Governorate is named for the historic town of Al-Qādisiyyah, site of the Battle of al-Qādisiyyah, where in 636 CE the Caliph Umar defeated the forces of the Persian Sassanid Empire, bringing Islam to all of modern Iraq and Iran. Al-Qadisiyah became the 10th of Iraq's 18 provinces to reach PIC on 16 July 2008. In so doing, it reverted to its former name of Al-Diwaniyah. [edit] External Links
