Akhtubinsk (Russian: Ахту́бинск) is a town in Astrakhan Oblast, Russia. It is located at 48°18′N 46°9′E / 48.3°N 46.15°E, on the left bank of the Akhtuba River (an arm of the Volga). Population: 44,100 (2005 est.); 45,542 (2002 Census); 30,000 (1968). Akhtubinsk was founded in 1959 by the merging of three settlements named Vladimirovka, Petropavlovskoye, and Akhtuba. Located 292 km to the north of Astrakhan. Railway stations Vladimirovka and Akhtuba on the Volgograd - Upper Baskunchak railway branch, terminal station Vladimirovskaya Quay. Cargo port on Akhtuba river, military airbase. Automobile road Volgograd-Astrakhan. Ship building and repair plant, milk factory, meat factory, bakery, mineral water plant. Akhtubinsk is the transfer shipping point for Bassol, the industrial complex which extracts salt from Baskunchak salt-lake. In Akhtubinsk a GLITs named after Valery Chkalov is located - a State Flight Testing Center. To the north of the city a military testing range Groshevo (Vladimirovka) is located. [edit] References
