Airwave's Logo

Airwave owns and operates the Airwave network, which provides voice and data solutions to a variety of emergency services and public safety organisations. It is the biggest public safety radio network in the world today. Being both secure and highly resilient the Airwave network delivers mission critical voice and data with 24/7 responsiveness. It offers greater resilience and enhanced coverage for users and provides the opportunity for agencies to be able to communicate seamlessly on one national network.

It is a secure digital, encrypted network and can be used for voice and data transmission.[1]

[edit] London Underground

The introduction of a communications network which could operate effectively in London's underground Tube network was a key recommendation following an inquiry into the 2005 London bombings. As a result Airwave handsets (or systems compatible with the Airwave network) were more widely rolled out across the three UK emergency services and are able to piggyback off the London underground's Connect network. Although not all emergency services in the UK are fully equipped with the Airwave technology, communications tests have indicated the system as used by London's police forces, works well even in the deepest parts of the Underground tunnel system, 35 metres below sea level.
