Air Malawi:
Air Malawi Limited is an airline based in Blantyre, Malawi. It is the national airline of Malawi, wholly owned by the Malawi government and operates regional passenger services. Its main base is Chileka International Airport, Blantyre, with a hub at Lilongwe International Airport[1].
[edit] History
Air Malawi was established by Act of Parliament and started operations on 1 September 1967. It succeeded another airline of the same name which had been established as a subsidiary of Central African Airways in 1964 with two C-47 Dakotas and three de Havilland DHC-2 Beavers. The first Air Malawi aircraft were two Vickers Viscounts – a 748D (7Q-YDL) and a 754D (7Q-YDK), two Avro 748s, a Britten-Norman Islander and a Beech Baron. Later a BAC 1-11-475 aircraft operated on regional routes to Harare, Johannesburg and Nairobi. In 1974 a London Gatwick service was started using a Vickers VC-10 in full livery although this service had stopped by the end of the 1970s. Short Skyvan, Britten-Norman Islander and Hawker Siddeley HS-748 aircraft were used for local and regional routes. These were replaced in the 1990s with Dornier 228 and ATR 42 aircraft. In 1985 a SAA Boeing 747SP was leased by the airline for VIP and Government flights. The BAC 1-11 was replaced with a Boeing 737.
On 10th September 2008 it was announced that there were plans for the Malawi government to sell Air Malawi off to Comair the British Airways franchise partner.
