Labrador Airways Limited, operating as Air Labrador, is a regional airline based in Goose Bay (CFB Goose Bay), Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It operates scheduled daily passenger and freight services throughout Labrador and Quebec, as well as charter operations with the options of landing in remote and off strip destinations with skis, wheels and floats. Its main base is Goose Bay Airport, with a secondary hub at Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon Airport, QC [1]. Its motto is "The Spirit of Flight" (French: "Esprit du vol").
[edit] History
The airline was established and started operations in 1948, as Newfoundland Airways operating float-equipped aircraft from a base in Gander, Newfoundland on charter, mail and freight work to northern Newfoundland and Labrador[citation needed]. Since then the base of the company has moved to Goose Bay. It was purchased in 1983 by Provincial Investments Inc., owned by Roger Pike, along with associate company, Labrador Aviation Services Ltd[citation needed]. Air Labrador is wholly owned by the Pike Family[citation needed]. Air Labrador conducted a fantasy flight in the 1990s with a Santa Claus visit on board while it taxied the tarmac[2]. On March 11, 2009 the company announced they were ceasing flight service to Montreal due to financial trouble. The last flight into Montreal was April 10, 2009[citation needed]. Airline service ended in Newfoundland in May 2009, one month after announcing the shut down of Montreal operations[citation needed]. In August 2009, additional employees were to be laid off as a Twin Otter based in Goose Bay will be removed from service per the continued fleet reduction plan[citation needed]. Air Labrador will relinquish the Quebec Lower North Shore flying rights to the Quebeçois regional airline Aeropro and transfer the Beech 1900[1]. Effective November 30, 2009. Air Labrador has shut down the Quebec city base and laid off further additional employees and removed an additional B1900 from service.
