Aegerten is a municipality in the district of Nidau of the canton of Berne in Switzerland.
[edit] HistoryAegerten is first mentioned in 1225 as villa Egerdon.[1] [edit] GeographyAegerten has an area of 2.2 square kilometers (0.8 sq mi). Of this area, 40.7% is used for agricultural purposes, while 28.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 26.4% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (4.6%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[2] The municipality has grown together with Brügg and Studen. It is located on the right bank of the Nidau-Büren channel. [edit] DemographicsAegerten has a population (as of 2007[update]) of 1,656, of which 9.7% are foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -4.7%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (90.9%), with French being second most common ( 4.2%) and Italian being third ( 1.3%). In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 34.2% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (23.9%), the FDP (17%) and the Green Party (7.1%). The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0-19 years old) make up 21.9% of the population, while adults (20-64 years old) make up 64% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 14%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Aegerten about 79.6% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule). Aegerten has an unemployment rate of 1.23%. As of 2005[update], there were 12 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 5 businesses involved in this sector. 169 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 21 businesses in this sector. 172 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 41 businesses in this sector.[2] The historical population is given in the following table:[1]
