Adilabad (Telugu: అదిలాబాదు, Urdu: آدل آباد), is a town and a municipality in Adilabad district in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. It has a population of 108,233 (agglomeration 2,58,233) (2006 census). It is the headquarters of the district of the same name.

Adilabad derives its name from the erstwhile ruler of Bijapur, Mohammed Adil Shah . During Rashtrakoota regime, this town/village was known as Edlawada which means "land of Oxen" It was created out of a sub-district named Sirpur-Tandur in 1905.

Historically, Adilabad has been home to a variety of cultures. Owing to its position at the border of central and southern India, it has been ruled by North Indian dynasties like the Mughals and the Mauryas and South Indian dynasties like the Satavahanas and the Chalukyas. The current culture of the district incorporates significant elements of the neighboring Marathi culture into the native Telugu culture.

Adilabad is located at 19°40′N 78°32′E / 19.67°N 78.53°E / 19.67; 78.53.[1] It has an average elevation of 264 metres (866 feet).

Adilabad was a railway station on Mudkhed-Adilabad Section of Hyderabad (HYB) Division of South Central Railway(SCR). After Divisional adjustments in 2003, which saw the bifurcation of Hyderabad Division, Adilabad now comes under Nanded(NED) Division of SCR. It has direct train connectivity with Hyderabad, Nizamabad, Nanded, Vijayawada, Nellore, Renigunta, Tirupati, Patna, Nagpur, Nasik, Mumbai CST, Warangal, Khammam, Tenali, Ongole, Aurangabad, Manmad etc.

National Highway 7(the largest NH in India) passes through Adilabad making the road transport most easy. It is well connected to rest of India by road. Hyderabad is 280 km from here.

Adilabad had an air strip which was destroyed by the Indian air force at the time of police action in 1948. The nearest airport is Nagpur but Hyderabad is most preferred.

As of 2001 India census,[2] Adilabad had a population of 108,233. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Adilabad has an average literacy rate of 65%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 57% of the males and 43% of females literate. 14% of the population is under 6 years of age. Telugu is the administrative language, and is also widely spoken. The other languages spoken are Dakhni Urdu, Hindi, Kannada and Marathi.The town has a predominant Hindu population with a considerable Muslim population.

Adilabad district is famous for coal mines.and have two polytechnice. One is located at Bellampalli.The academic year students of 1998-2001 are well settled.
