Actel Corporation (NASDAQ: ACTL) is a manufacturer of single-chip FPGA solutions. Actel is most well known for their anti-fuse and flash based FPGAs. It is headquartered in Mountain View, California, with offices in New Jersey, France, India, Ireland and Germany.
[edit] History & CompetitionA few years after Xilinx founded the FPGA industry with the first commercially viable programmable chip in 1985, Actel became the first serious competitor.[2] Actel introduced their first programmable product in 1988 and by 1993 served about 18 percent of the market.[2] However, today Altera and Xilinx have largely crowded out Actel, with Xilinx alone representing over half of the entire market.[3][4] [edit] TechnologiesActel develops FPGAs that are used in various commercial, industrial, military and space applications. The product families are either anti-fuse (SX-A and Axcelerator families) based or flash based (Fusion, ProASIC/3/3E and IGLOO families), making them programmable yet non-volatile. Actel is primarily focused on FPGAs for use in military and space applications. Several Actel FPGA families are radiation hardened and support triple module redundancy (TMR) either directly in hardware or via special EDAC firmware. [edit] References
