The All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) is organized by the CBSE in India for admission to various under-graduate courses in engineering and architecture. Admission to the prestigious National Institutes of Technology is through this test. Students opting for B.Tech are tested in physics, mathematics and chemistry. The test duration is 3 hours. The maximum marks and the number of questions vary every year like the CAT.(Total marks were 315 in the year 2008, 360 in the year 2007 while it was 540 in 2006). However equal weightage is given to all the three sections. Students opting for B.Arch are tested in mathematics and an aptitude test. It is held in the final Sunday of April and results are announced near may end. Candidates are ranked on an all India basis and also according to their position in state. Thus, they have an All India Rank (AIR) and a state rank(SR).

All India Engineering/Architecture Entrance Examination (AIEEE ) 2009 for admission to Engineering and Architecture (including Planning) programmes at the undergraduate level in the country is being conducted by CBSE
All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) is held for the candidates seeking admission to Engineering, Architecture, Planning and Pharmacy degree courses in different engineering colleges and institutes in India. A centralized counselling system is provided for filling up the available seats all over India. This counselling is available only for the candidates who stand in merit of All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE).
The exam date for All India Engineering Entrance Examination had been announced by CBSE i.e. 26th April 2009.
The sale of application form from the identified branches of Syndicate Banks all over India, identified institutions and Regional Offices of CBSE will be started from 5th December, 2008 to 5th January, 2009
Like every year, this year too, the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) will happen on the last Sunday of April. The CBSE has released a notification confirming the date of AIEEE 2009 as April 26, 2009. On that day, the future of a large number of students aspiring to study in the prestigious NITs would be shaped. If you are a science group student in XII standard, it is high time you decided when you are going to start your preparation for the AIEEE and how you are going to prepare.
Why the AIEEE is an important exam The AIEEE is important because it is the gateway to the prestigious NITs, a set of 20 excellent institutions spread out across the country. The NITs are considered next only to the IITs in terms of the quality of education, the quality of students and hence the quality of career that a student can hope to secure. In addition, a student who is well prepared for the AIEEE will also automatically be prepared for a number of other important entrance exams such as the BITSAT, the VITEEE, the SRMEEE and the entrance exams The AIEEE is important because it is the gateway to the prestigious NITs, a set of 20 excellent institutions spread out across the country. The NITs are considered next only to the IITs in terms of the quality of education, the quality of students and hence the quality of career that a student can hope to secure. In addition, a student who is well prepared for the AIEEE will also automatically be prepared for a number of other important entrance exams such as the BITSAT, the VITEEE, the SRMEEE and the entrance exams conducted by SASTRA and Amritha University. Especially for students in Tamil Nadu, the AIEEE is very important because it provides students with a number of additional opportunities to pursue an engineering education in a good institution. With more and more students getting centums in Maths, Physics and/or Chemistry in the XII standard State Board examination, the competition for seats in the top engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu is becoming tougher with each passing year. By opening up opportunities that do not fall under the Single Window System of admission of the DOTE, the AIEEE and the other similar exams mentioned above add to the options available to a student. The Great New AIEEE Opportunity Last year, a significant change was brought about in the process of admission to NITs through the AIEEE. While until the year before last, 50% of the "Other State Quota" seats in all NITs were filled on the basis of State Rank, last year onwards, these seats are being filled only on the basis of the All India Rank obtained in the AIEEE. This opens up a much Last year, a significant change was brought about in the process of admission to NITs through the AIEEE. While until the year before last, 50% of the "Other State Quota" seats in all NITs were filled on the basis of State Rank, last year onwards, these seats are being filled only on the basis of the All India Rank obtained in the AIEEE. This opens up a much larger number of seats to a meritorious student seeking to study in one of the NITs. As against around 525 seats that were available to students from Tamil Nadu earlier, the number of seats open for competition has gone up to around 8000. This development has made the AIEEE a far more important exam for a student seeking to study in the best possible institute/college for an engineering education. The AIEEE is largely different from the regular exams at school and the Board Exam. It is highly problem-solving oriented and hence requires additional preparation over and above that done for the school exams. Problem solving requires a deeper understanding of the concepts than that which would be sufficient for school and Board exams. Developing the requisite level of problem-solving ability requires you to understand the concepts suitably and work out a large number of problems thereby strengthening the understanding of the concepts as well as learning how to apply these concepts in solving problems. Such exhaustive working out of problems requires that you devote a reasonable time to this activity. You will also need to decide when you wish to initiate this preparation. While many students would opt for a classroom based programme that commences immediately after their Board Exams, it is possible and preferable for you to start your part of the preparation immediately. This would require you to get adequate and suitable study material that contains large number of problems on the pattern of the AIEEE and spend some time everyday from now working out these problems. A time allotment of around 1 hour a day for the next 2 to 2 ½ months would leave you reasonably well prepared for the intensive preparation you would anyway put in after your Board Exams. Such a limited time allotment would ensure that this preparation does not adversely affect your Board Exam preparation. In fact, by focusing your current AIEEE preparation on XII standard syllabus, you could enhance your preparation for the Board Exams. you. time to act is now. The writer is Director, T.I.M.E, Chennai
[edit] Procedure
In 2007, around 8,50,000 wrote the AIEEE and in 2008 around 9,50,000 (a whopping 1,00,000 increment) applicants have already been registered making it one of the largest such admission exams in the world.[1]
All candidates, with the exception of those performing very poorly, are eligible either for central counseling or state-specific or category-specific counseling on basis of their AIR. Counseling for SC/ST candidates and SC/ST physically handicapped candidates is done on the first two days of counseling. Then the physically handicapped in the Open (OP) category are counseled.
The Pattern keeps varying every year as declared by CBSE, the conducting authority of AIEEE. The level of questions follows the NCERT Syllabus of Class 11 and Class 12. From the past 2 years the total marks of the paper is being declared by CBSE in the prospectus without declaring the number of the questions appearing in the exam on the lines of IIT JEE.
In 2008, the AIEEE pattern was similar to that of IIT-JEE, with more applicative questions in mathematics and physics sections.[2]
[edit] Future
Reposing Faith in organisational capacity and technical infrastructure of the NIT system the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has decided to entrust the task of conducting the prestigious AIEEE to NITs themselves starting from 2008-09 session itself.
MNNIT Allahabad has been chosen by the MHRD to host the CCB for prestigious AIEEE starting with 2008 session.Earlier, the counselling procedure was dealt by a Central Counselling Board (CCB) based at New Delhi. The important decision to this effect was taken by the MHRD on the advice of the NIT Director's meeting who had unanimously advocated transferring of the responsibility for CCB of AIEEE counselling to NITs.
Every year director of a NIT will be the chairman of the CCB along with the selected directors of other institutes in the counselling board. For the year 2008 Prof Samaddar of MNNIT Allahabad has been made the Chairman along with representation of directors of NIT-Calicut, NIT-Kurekshetra and NIT-Surat in the board. The NITs will conduct the counselling and assume the responsibility of setting question papers as well from the year 2009. Similar to the conduct of the IIT-JEE and counselling by one of the six IITs in the country every year on a rotation basis, one among the 20 NITs in the country would be made a nodal agency for the conduct of AIEEE every year.
Based on the result of AIEEE – 2008, other NITs will perform the task of allocating seats to be filled up as per quota on All-India basis in participating central institutions, deemed universities and other institutions in the country. The chosen NIT would execute the various responsibilities hitherto undertaken by the CCB such as finalisation of procedure, schedule, centres and arrangements for counselling. This development will result in a major relief for students belonging to the central districts who would appear for the AIEEE from 2009 onwards.
