[edit] Background and recording

The way people listen to music has changed, with the advent of the download the emphasis has reverted to single tracks. It hasn't helped that most people have forgotten how to make a decent album. I'm constantly disappointed with records I buy

— Tim Wheeler, June, 2007

[edit] Split from Infectious Records

The band's final conventional record, Twilight of the Innocents, was released on June 29, 2007. In an interview with News Of The World, guitarist and vocalist Tim Wheeler spoke of this release and how it contributed towards the band's desire to release in a different way, mainly concerning the lack of support from their at-the-time record label Infectious - parented by Warner Music Group; "We'd never put so much into a record, because it was the first one we'd produced ourselves. We spent two years of our lives on that record but the label didn't support it all. It made us wary of putting ourselves in that position ever again. Right now, I can't see us ever returning to that way of working and putting out our music."[3]

From this the band members themselves formed Atomic Heart Records, setting up headquarters in New York City, calling their new studio Atomic Heart. Band members Tim and Mark both moved to New York; "It was a dream of mine, ever since our first American tour in the mid-1990s, to live in New York", whilst drummer Rick resided in Edinburgh's Craiglockhart, commuting to the New York Studio on a regular basis and working in "intensive bursts". The announcement itself of the band's boycott on the album format came at the time of release for Twilight of the Innocents, which the band called "their final album" - sparking rumours over the possibility of Ash splitting up.[4]

[edit] Recording at Atomic Heart Studio

Upon entering the studio the band recorded "Survivor", later titled "Ichiban", "Coming Around Again" a cover of Carly Simon, a Beach Boys cover of "Do You Wanna Dance". Soon after several early titles of tracks surfaced on the bands official website, including "Survivor" - now titled "Ichiban", "Prypiat" which was written originally for Twilight of the Innocents, however wasn't finished in time to make the album, "Return of White Rabbit" which at the time Tim Wheeler supposedly joked about being their comeback single, "Nouvelle Adventures" which features both Tim and Mark on bass guitar, "No Face (Jesus Christ)", "Daedalus", as well as "Hospital Song" and "Lay Down Your Arms" which were both originally intended for Twilight of the Innocents.[5] Soon after more titles were leaked, including "Space Shot" and 'Tracer (Without You)".[6]

In NME vocalist & guitarist Tim Wheeler stated "We wanted to be the first people to do it like this" also saying, "I think it'll be great for our fans waiting every two weeks knowing they're going to get a song and wondering what it'll be like. It'll be fun".[7] Bassist Mark Hamilton also spoke of the merits of releasing in an alternative way; "we thought we’d come up with a different model where we never really had to be actually be away, that might work better. That was one of the reasons. We had the freedom when launching our own label as well, to try something different, so we’re going to give it a go. I think if it works, a lot of people might copy it."[8]

Custom "Return of White Rabbit" artworks; 'playing cards' by drummer Rick McMurray, 'apocalyptic bunny rabbit' by vocalist/guitarist Tim Wheeler and 'day-glo stencil' by bassist Mark Hamilton[9][10]

[edit] Artwork

Each single is assigned a specific colour and letter A-Z, prequel track "Return of White Rabbit" features the upside down stylized as ʁ, representing the rabbit. The front of each single simply shows the letter followed by the bands logo below, whilst on the back the track name is shown. "Each colour really represents the way I hear each song," Wheeler stated in interview with News of the World "I've got a book of Pantone tints and I've tried to match every track as closely as possible to the colour that's in my head when I think of the song."[3] The coloured artwork has also been used for the promotion of their A-Z Tour, with each colour representing a place and a letter of the alphabet, similarly the band through their forum and the assistance of their webmaster have allowed fans to create their own avatars and use emoticons in the A-Z style.[11]

[edit] Release

The 26 singles of the A-Z Series are released once every 2 weeks through both digital download and 7" limited edition vinyl. The opening to the series was a free download "Return of White Rabbit", released on May 18, 2009, promoting the track were three music videos, an animated one created by Big Button,[12] a home-made one - following the 'White Rabbit' around New York City,[13] and a live footage video, filmed by fans at Thekla in Bristol.[14] The first single to be announced for release was "True Love 1980", opening the series on October 12 2009, with subscription to the series itself opening on October 5 2009.

The digital download service itself is provided through 7digital's music download service in the United Kingdom[15] whilst elsewhere around the world, the service is provided by Topspin.[16] Due to an issue with the service the subscription to both physically release singles, and the digital downloads were delayed, subscription opened on October 6 for the 7"s, and on October 8 for digital downloads.[17]

For distribution of the 1000 limited 7" singles, online music store recordstore.co.uk were chosen by the band, and whilst other stores would provide the vinyl, recordstore.co.uk would be the main store providing subscription to the physical release, as well as a limited edition box. Manager of Record Store, Steve Wheeler commented on the partnership stating; "being chosen by an innovative and popular band like Ash is testament to the quality service that Recordstore.co.uk provide forward-thinking labels and artists"[18] Other stores providing both physical and digital downloads of the series would also include HMV, itunes and Amazon.[19]

The band in October 2009 confirmed that only the first half of the A-Z Series were 'set in stone', with mastering taking place, and the artwork, pressing and release dates confirmed, however the second half of the series would at the time be decided once the series had been launched, with the band holding a then total of 44 tracks recorded, and plans to re-enter the recording studio again in late 2009, "the first six months are set in stone, but the second half is still flexible. It’s nice to have that kind of freedom".[8]

Bassist Mark Hamilton confirmed that the band will have a large amount of b-sides from the series, with them constantly recording tracks in their Atomic Hearts studio, but have yet to decide upon the exact way the b-sides will be released.[20]

After the original free download of "Return of White Rabbit" to promote the series, the A-Z Series was celebrated on October 14 by the release of the original 'extended mix' and an 'Atomic Heart' mix of "Return of White Rabbit", available for free download through sneakattackmedia.com.[21]

[edit] Promotion

On September 29, 2009 the band released an animated trailer for the A-Z Series, the video trailer, created by Big Button features a montage of sound clips from tracks featured in the A-Z Series.[22]

On October 7, 2009 NME.com was 'taken over' by Ash, with videos, competitions and other exclusive content being shown on the music website.[23] Over the course of the A-Z Tour the band posted tour video blogs onto NME, the first was released on October 21 and features behind the scenes footage of various interviews and rehearsals in London.[24][25] The band also offered a number of competitions, the first one, run through NME was a chance to meet the band at a date of choice on the A-Z tour, other competitions included wining a handmade "Return of White Rabbit" CD promo and a signed 7" copy of "True Love 1980".[26][27] Through the bands own website a competition was run for attendees of the A-Z tour to win a full digital subscription to the A-Z series at each date of the tour in a raffle format.[28]

The band, either individually, or as a group participated in various interviews promoting their alternative way of releasing, including interviews with The Guardian, The Herald,[29] News Of The World, Billboard,[30][31] Kerrang!,[32][33] NME, East Mag,[34] TUFS[35] culturedeluxe.com,[36] as well as being interviewed on television show Live from Studio Five broadcast on Five on October 15 2009,[37] as well as being interviewed on Steve Lamacq's BBC Radio 6 show on October 19 2009.[38]

[edit] Live

The band embarked on a 4 date UK tour consisting of performances at Brighton Concorde 2 on June 3, Portsmouth Wedgewood Rooms the following day and two dates at the London Bloomsbury Ballroom on the 6th and 7 June 2009. At the performances they showcased new material, including "Space Shot", "True Love 1980" and "Return of White Rabbit".[39][40]

The bands full A-Z tour was announced on August 26 2009, bassist Mark Hamilton told eastmagazine.co.uk that the band looked for alternatives to the usual places they would visit on the tour; "We told our agent that we don’t want to go to the cities we would usually hit on a regular tour. Then he came back with a bunch of dates, but he had quite a lot of work to do on this. But that was good; it was good to make him actually work." going on to say "There were a number of venues we told him to change, saying, ‘We usually play there, so get us something different".[8] the tour, like the series would consist of 26 dates, begin on October 19 in Aldershot, and ending on November 23 in Zennor.[41] soon after the band announced two dates in Ireland - Dublin and Belfast.[42]

In November 2009 the band appeared on BBC E24, The Friday Show & Children In Need as well as making a second appearance on Sky Sports Soccer AM.[43][44][45]

[edit] Personnel

Neither Ash nor its former guitarist Charlotte Hatherley has ruled out working together again.

For the recording of the new singles, the band have collaborated with a number of other musicians including a saxophone player[48] on the track "Return of White Rabbit" and "Ichiban", Tim and Mark were joined by James Levy and Eric from the band Levy, for the song's gang vocals.[49][50]

The band were joined by Claudius Mittendorfer, who previously worked with the band on their album Meltdown as an assisting engineer, he acted as both a producer and engineer for the recording process of the tracks constructed at Atomic Hearts Studio, the band themselves also produced many of the A-Z tracks.[51]

For live performances, many new tracks simply have a backing track, instead of enlisting another member, however the band have not ruled out either recruiting a completely new member, or reuniting with former guitarist Charlotte Hatherley in the future, with Tim stating "I do miss her as a friend on tour" as well as stating "It could be good to get someone in for extra guitar and keyboards and add some layers"[52] whilst Charlotte in interview with NME simply said it would be a "possibility in the future" and that her and Tim regularly talk despite her having left the band in 2006.[53]

[edit] Reception

NME reacted positively to the release of ROWR adding it to their 10 Tracks You Have to Hear This Week internet blog calling it a "a weirdly effective funk-pop song"[54] similarly Kerrang! magazine also made added it to their 10 Songs You Should Hear Now playlist stating; "they're only doing singles now, if this new humdigger of a tune is anything to go by, then it will be a decision well made"[55] The Irish Times rated the track 3/5, whilst The Times said regarding the single "...this revelatory rump-shaker, triggering pleasure sensors we didn't even know we had".[56] In Rock Sound magazines June 2009 addition, New Found Glory lead singer Jordan Pundik and guitarist Chad Glibert rated the track 2/10 calling it "fun" but disliking the disco element and experimentation with synthesizers, bassist Mark responded to the review on Ash's official website stating "we promise to return to our studio and think long and hard about our next release or daring to experiment or deviate from any generic sound or formula which might confuse or challenge".[57]

[edit] Releases

There will be a total of 26 singles in the A-Z Series, and an undetermined number of b-sides. Not all of the singles will be radio singles; the ones that are will most likely be accompanied by a music video. The title of each release will be revealed the Wednesday after the previous release and is being referred to as 'Ash Wednesday'.[58][59]
