7TWO is an Australian free-to-air standard definition digital television channel which was launched by the Seven Network on 1 November 2009 at 12pm.[2]

The channel has been designed to target a broad range of viewers, broadcasting programmes from Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and will complement existing programming on the primary Seven channel.[3]

[edit] Launch and promotion

The channel was officially announced on 23 October 2009. Earlier, it was suggested that Seven would launch its secondary channel around November 2009, with numerous possible names in speculation including 7PLUS, PLUS7, Channel Mate and 7TWO. Seven programming chief Tim Worner has stated that some of these possible names were red herrings to keep details of the channel a secret.[4]

Seven presenter Tom Williams will serve as the "face" of the new channel. A promotional video called "Its Time", featuring Seven Network personalities and clips of shows and movies intended to be broadcast on the channel, was launched on the multi-channel's website as well as on the Seven Network itself. The new channel is also receiving continuing cross-promotion on the primary Seven channel and vice versa.

There has been no news from Prime Television, whether or not 7TWO, will be broadcast in Prime's licensed areas which include cities Newcastle, Wollongong, Gold Coast and regional NSW/VIC. Prime has indicated that 7TWO will not launch in Canberra until 2010 with January the likely start month.[5] However, inquiries to Prime Television indicate that the delay is not limited to Canberra, as they were unaware of the launch until Channel Seven made their public announcements.

Southern Cross Television viewers in Tasmania and Darwin began to receive 7TWO on December 1, 2009.[6]

[edit] Programming

Premiere episodes of existing Seven shows such as Lost, Ugly Betty, Heroes and 24 will now appear on the new channel. In addition, the channel will feature a mix of new and "classic" programming as well as movies from Disney's studios.[7]

The daytime schedule will feature soap operas such as Coronation Street and classic episodes of Home and Away, as well as other shows such as The Martha Stewart Show and Moonlighting. Cooking shows will screen on weekday afternoons. Primetime programmes will screen under themed nightly programming blocks such as "Action & Adventure" and "Lifestyle".[7] Classic AFL matches will make up late night programming.[8]

As well as this, Southern Cross Television rebroadcast the service through TNT Tasmania[10] and TND Darwin[11].
