3FatChicks is an information and community website focused on diet and nutrition. The site is oriented toward a female audience and is sometimes referred to by its full name, 3 Fat Chicks on a Diet!

Contents

[edit] History

3FatChicks was founded in 1997 by sisters Suzanne Barnett, Amy Buchanan, and Jennifer Honeycutt. The sisters were each overweight and planned to undertake a project to lose weight as a group. They established 3FatChicks as a way to hold themselves accountable both to each other and to the general public during their quest for weight loss by openly sharing their experiences online.[1]

When the site launched, there was little content other than the sisters' personal stories about struggling with weight loss. The candid nature of 3FatChicks connected with Internet users, and the site rapidly developed a loyal following of visitors. In response to the site's growing popularity, the sisters added interactive features such a discussion forum and user blogs.[2]

By 2002, 3FatChicks had 19,000 registered members. Membership grew to 58,000 by 2006[3], and currently numbers more than 76,000 members, according to the site's discussion forum homepage. Additional content, such as information about plus-size clothing and fitness products, has been added to the site over the course of the past decade.

3FatChicks was acquired by Internet Brands in 2009.

[edit] Site Functionality

3FatChicks features a large repository of diet and fitness-related content, as well as social media features.

Content on the site is broken into five main sections:[4][5][6][7]

  • Fitness: Reviews of fitness products and accessories.
  • Food: A large collection of recipes and articles about healthy eating.
  • Plus Size: Articles about finding and wearing plus-size clothing.

3FatChicks' social media features include an active discussion forum and member blogs that allow site members to share their personal weight loss journeys with other members.

Though the content on 3FatChicks is mainly oriented toward a female audience, the site also offers a small collection of articles and discussion forums for men.[8]
