The 28th general election in Alberta, Canada, will take place when the Premier formally advises the Lieutenant Governor to dissolve the Legislative Assembly.
A general election must be held at least once every five years, meaning that the election must take place in 2013 at the latest.

- May 15, 2009: Calgary-Glenmore MLA Ron Stevens resigns to accept a judgeship.
- July 16, 2009: The Green Party of Alberta is deregistered by Elections Alberta.
- July 18, 2009: Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo MLA Guy Boutilier was removed from the Progressive Conservative caucus.
- August 29, 2009: Robert Leddy is chosen as the interim leader of the Alberta Party replacing Bruce Stubbs.[1]
- September 14, 2009: A by-election in Calgary-Glenmore elects Paul Hinman.
- October 17, 2009: The Wildrose Alliance selects Danielle Smith to replace Paul Hinman as leader in a convention in Edmonton.
- November 7, 2009 a leadership review of Premier Ed Stelmach was held at the PC convention in Edmonton. He garnered 77.4% support.
- February 6, 2010 a leadership convention will be held for the Alberta Party.
