The 2022 Winter Olympics, formally called the XXIV Olympic Winter Games is an event that the International Olympic Committee has yet to organize. The winning bid will be announced in the Summer of 2015.
[edit] Potential bids[edit] AsiaLi Zhanshu, governor of Heilongjiang indicated interest for the 2018 Games.[1] However, China did not bid for the Games leaving an opening for the 2022 edition instead.[2] Harbin bid for the 2010 Winter Olympics, but did not make the short list. [edit] EuropeRomanian Prime Minister Călin Popescu Tăriceanu announced on June 14, 2007 that the country is considering a bid for the Games to be held in that area.[3] Geneva officially supports the candidacy of neighbouring French city Annecy for the 2018 Winter Olympics[4] and moved its own bid to the 2022 games.[5] Meanwhile, Zurich, Sion, and Berne have also expressed interest in the bid.[6] The mayor of Zaragoza, Juan Alberto Belloch, together with representatives of the cities of Huesca and Jaca and the regional government of Aragon, announced their intention to bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics.[7] Initially, Zaragoza was expected to bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics, but it was reasoned that, due to the unofficial continental rotation policy, it would be unlikely for Europe to be awarded back-to-back games.[8] Zaragoza played a significant role in Jaca’s failed bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics, as Zaragoza, 142 km south of Jaca, was expected to host most of the ice events and the opening and closing ceremonies, in contradiction to the Olympic Charter. In a hypothetic Zaragoza bid, snow events would still take place around Jaca and other sites in the Aragonese Pyrenees, connected to the city by a highway and the Spanish service of high-speed trains. The mayor of Lleida, Àngel Ros, suggested Catalonia should lead a bid of the Pyrenees if Zaragoza's proposal doesn't include other regions that share the mountain range (Catalonia, the principality of Andorra and southern France).[9] Since Ukraine did not partake in the 2018 Winter Olympics bid ,Ukraine will set focus on the 2022 Winter Olympics. The ski resort in Bukovel has expanded to 262 acres which lies in Ukraine's famous mountains the Carpathian Mountains. [edit] North AmericaFormer Quebec Nordiques owner, Marcel Aubut, is very interested in getting Quebec City a major sporting event after losing the 2002 IOC bid to Salt Lake City and the 2010 COC bid to Vancouver, the eventual 2010 Winter Olympic Games host.[10]
Officials from Quebec and the State of New York have met to discuss the possibility of a joint bid between those two cities considering the proximity between them.[11] However, this violates many of the IOC rules for the selection of a host city. Those rules would have to be waived or changed in order for this bid to continue. A similar multi-national bid between Vancouver and Seattle is being explored for the 2028 Summer Olympics. With Vancouver hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics, the earliest that Canada could hope to host the Olympics is 2022.[11] Montreal hosted the 1976 Summer Olympics. Lake Placid hosted the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics and was the first city in North America to host two Olympic games. The city of Albany has recently stated they will also be part of the joint bid, more recently, officials have stated that Lake Placid will more likely join with Albany, due to the multi-national ban. Some of the facilities and venues would include Montana State University (Bozeman), Big Sky, Bridger Bowl, and Moonlight Basin ski areas.[12] Denver was preparing a 2018 bid, but the USOC decided instead to focus its efforts on Chicago's 2016 Summer Olympics bid. "In the short term, it's discouraging. But our mission has been long term," said Robert Cohen, chairman of the Metro Denver Sports Commission board of directors. "This is like running a marathon. Every mile doesn't go the way you planned it. But I think we're doing all we need to do. I'm excited by what we've done. I'm more encouraged than discouraged." Denver won, but declined to host the 1976 Winter Olympics.[13]
Officials from Reno & Tahoe have met to discuss the possibility of a joint bid between those two areas to have the 2022 Winter Games. "Our coalition's goal is to continue its concerted efforts to establish and enhance these tourism and recreational offerings, positioning our area to be even more competitive for the next possible Olympic opportunity -- hosting the 2022 Olympic Winter Games.", said Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, chairman of the Reno Tahoe Winter Games Coalition Board of Directors.[14] The region hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics at the Squaw Valley Ski Resort. [edit] OceaniaAccording to 2007 reports, the New Zealand Olympic Committee is pushing for a bid for a Winter Olympic Games.[15] Although no city has yet applied to the NZOC, suggestions include Queenstown and Dunedin, or a bid covering the whole of New Zealand, the country's South Island or the Otago region. No information has been given as for which games New Zealand will formally bid for. [edit] South AmericaSantiago is a potential candidate for 2022[16][17][18] or 2026. Chile is hosting the World Youth Downhill Skiing 2010. The nation may bid for 2022 or 2026. Possible sites include the southern centers of Temuco (Pucon) or Chillán, near Chile's Thermal Baths, or the central ski resort La Parva near Santiago. Santiago possesses excellent natural conditions and infrastructure, which some consider the best of the Southern Hemisphere. The Winter Games have never been held in the Southern Hemisphere or South America. [edit] References
