Roger Federer won in the final 5–7, 7–6(6), 7–6(5), 3–6, 16–14, against Andy Roddick. Their match in the finals was the longest men's singles final (in terms of games played) in Grand Slam history with 77 games played, breaking the record of 71 games set at the 1927 Australian Open. The match also had the longest fifth set in a Grand Slam men's singles final, surpassing the 1927 French Open final, which went to 11–9 in the fifth.[1] The match took 4 hours and 17 minutes to complete, and the fifth set alone lasted 95 minutes.[2] The men's final had the highest number of viewers in the UK of any Wimbledon final since 2001.[3]. By winning his 15th Grand Slam, Roger Federer surpassed Sampras' record of Single Grand Slam titles.
Rafael Nadal was the defending champion, but withdrew from the tournament due to knee tendonitis.[4]
