The 2009 Jacksonville Jaguars season is the 15th season for the team in the National Football League. Having started the season with a 7-7-0 record, The Jaguars have improved upon their 5-11-0 record in 2008 and aim make the playoffs.

The team got new uniforms for the 2009 season.[1] Team owner Wayne Weaver reportedly wanted to "clean up" the look, feeling that the team had too many uniform styles.

[edit] Week 1: at Indianapolis Colts

at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Indiana

The Jaguars began their season at Lucas Oil Stadium for a Week 1 divisional game with their AFC South rival, the Indianapolis Colts. After a scoreless first quarter, Jacksonville scored first as kicker Josh Scobee made a 24-yard field goal. The Colts would answer by Joseph Addai running for a 3-yard touchdown, while the Jaguars closed out the half with Scobee making a 46-yard field goal.

Indianapolis would increase their lead in the third quarter as quarterback Peyton Manning completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Reggie Wayne. Jacksonville rallied in the fourth quarter with Maurice Jones-Drew's 7-yard touchdown run, but the game tying two-point conversion failed. The Jaguars attempted to get another key drive going, but the Colts' defense held them on fourth down. Jacksonville opened their season at 0-1 for the third year in a row.

[edit] Week 2: vs. Arizona Cardinals

at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, Jacksonville, Florida

In week 2, the Arizona Cardinals traveled to Jacksonville Municipal Stadium to take on the Jaguars. The Cardinals scored on their first drive with a 1 yard run by Tim Hightower. The Jaguars also scored on their first possession with a 30 yard Josh Scobee field goal. Arizona then answered with a 45 yard field goal by Neil Rackers. In the second quarter, trailing 10-3, the Jaguars lined up for another Scobee field goal only to have it blocked by Calais Campbell and retuned by Antrel Rolle for an 83 yard touchdown. The Cardinals led 17-3 and would extend their lead to 24-3 by halftime.

Kurt Warner would find Larry Fitzgerald in the third quarter for a 22 yard touchdown pass that increased the Cardinal lead to 28. The Jaguars would attempt to mount a comeback with two second half touchdowns, but the Cardinals held on for the victory. The Cardinals improved to 1-1 and the Jaguars fell to 0-2 for the second year in a row.

at Reliant Stadium, Houston, Texas

The Jaguars were looking for their first win as they traveled to Reliant Stadium in week 3. Jacksonville scored first with a 52 yard field goal by Josh Scobee. Houston then answered with a 18 yard touchdown pass from Matt Schaub to Jacoby Jones. In the second quarter, David Garrard would score on a 2 yard rushing touchdown to give the Jaguars the lead, 10-7. On the very next drive however, Schaub found Kevin Walter in the end zone for a 9 yard touchdown. The Texans lead 14-10. Later in the second, Maurice Jones-Drew broke free for a 61 yard touchdown run that reclaimed the lead for Jacksonville 17-14. The Texans ended the half with a 2 yard pass from Schaub to Owen Daniels. Houston had the lead at halftime, 21-17.

Early in the third quarter, Jones-Drew once again gave his team the lead with a 1 yard touchdown run. Later on, Kris Brown tacked on a 27 yard field goal to tie the game at 24. In the fourth quarter, Jones-Drew had the only score, an 8 yard touchdown run, that reclaimed the lead for the Jaguars. The Texans had a chance to tie the game with 3 minutes to go, but a Chris Brown fumble on the goal line helped Jacksonville hold on for the win, 31-24.

The Jaguars got their first win of the season, improving to 1-2.

[edit] Week 4: vs. Tennessee Titans

at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, Jacksonville, Florida

Coming off their divisional road win over the Texans, the Jaguars went home for a Week 4 AFC South duel with the Tennessee Titans. Jacksonville would get off to a fast start in the first quarter with a 22-yard field goal from kicker Josh Scobee and a 9-yard touchdown run from running back Maurice Jones-Drew. In the second quarter, the Titans would get on the board with kicker Rob Bironas making a 29-yard field goal. Afterwards, the Jaguars would add onto their lead as quarterback David Garrard completing a 9-yard and a 15-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker (with Scobee getting a 50-yard field goal in between).

Jacksonville would add onto their lead in the third quarter with Scobee nailing a 33-yard field goal. Afterwards, Tennessee would begin their comeback attempt as quarterback Kerry Collins completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Nate Washington (with a failed 2-point conversion). The Titans would continue their rally in the fourth quarter with Collins getting a 10-yard touchdown run, followed by running back Chris Johnson's 2-point conversion run. After that, the Jags would close out the game with Garrard's 33-yard touchdown pass to tight end Marcedes Lewis.

With the divisional win, the Jaguars improved to 2-2.

at Qwest Field, Seattle, Washington

Coming off their home win over the Titans, the Jaguars flew to Qwest Field for a Week 5 interconference duel with the Seattle Seahawks. Prior to the game, wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker was ruled inactive for the game due to breaking team rules.

Jacksonville would trail early in the first quarter as Seahawks kicker Olindo Mare nailed a 47-yard field goal. Then, Seattle got going in the second quarter as Mare booted a 27-yard field goal, followed by quarterback Matt Hasselbeck completing a 34-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh and a 44-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Nate Burleson.

Seattle kept its domination going in the third quarter as Hasselbeck hooked up with Houshmandzadeh again on a 13-yard touchdown pass and Burleson again on a 5-yard touchdown pass. Afterwards, the Seahawks closed out the game in the fourth quarter with defensive end Nick Reed returning a fumble 79 yards for a touchdown.

With the loss, the Jaguars fell to 2-3.

at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, Jacksonville, Florida

Hoping to rebound from an embarrassing performance against the Seahawks, the Jaguars returned home for a Week 6 interconference duel with the St. Louis Rams. Jacksonville would get off to a slow start in the first quarter as Rams quarterback Marc Bulger found wide receiver Donnie Avery on a 17-yard touchdown pass, yet the Jaguars quickly answered with a 4-yard touchdown run by running back Maurice Jones-Drew (with a failed PAT). Afterwards, St. Louis would snag the second quarter's only points with kicker Josh Brown making a 52-yard field goal.

After a scoreless third quarter, a back-and-forth fourth quarter would endue. Jacksonville would take the lead with a 1-yard touchdown run by Jones-Drew, but Rams defensive Leonard Little would return an interception 36 yards for a touchdown. Even with Jones-Drew's 3-yard touchdown run, St. Louis tied the game with Brown's 27-yard field goal. In overtime, the Jags got the last laugh as kicker Josh Scobee booted the game-winning 36-yard field goal.

With the win, the Jaguars went into their bye week at 3-3.

at LP Field, Nashville, Tennessee

Coming off their bye week, the Jaguars flew to LP Field for a Week 8 AFC South rematch with the Tennessee Titans. Jacksonville would trail in the first quarter as Titans kicker Rob Bironas made a 48-yard field goal. Tennessee would add onto their lead in the second quarter as quarterback Vince Young completed a 6-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Nate Washington, followed by Bironas nailing a 25-yard field goal. Afterwards, the Jaguars began their rally as running back Maurice Jones-Drew got an 80-yard touchdown run.

Jacksonville would begin the third quarter with a 79-yard touchdown run from Jones-Drew (with a blocked PAT), but the Titans came right back with a 52-yard touchdown run from running back Chris Johnson and a 45-yard field goal from Bironas. Tennessee would then seal the win in the fourth quarter as Johnson got an 89-yard touchdown run.

With the loss, the Jaguars fell to 3-4.

This would become the first game in NFL history where there were 4 touchdown runs of 50 or more yards. Also, Jones-Drew (8 carries for 177 yards) and Johnson (24 carries for 228 yards) would join the Browns' Bobby Mitchell (14 carries for 232 yards) and the Redskins' Johnny Olszewski (18 carries for 190 yards) on November 15, 1959 as the only pair of opposing running backs to both have at least 175 yards rushing in the same game.

Hoping to rebound from their divisional road loss to the Titans, the Jaguars went home for a Week 9 duel with the Kansas City Chiefs. In the first quarter, Jacksonville trailed as Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop made a 45-yard field goal. The Jaguars would answer with a 28-yard touchdown run from rookie running back Rashad Jennings. Kansas City would strike back as Succop nailed a 21-yard field goal, yet the Jaguars came right back with quarterback David Garrard completing a 61-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker.

After getting the only score of the third quarter (a 27-yard field goal from kicker Josh Scobee), Jacksonville continued to add onto their lead as running back Maurice Jones-Drew got a 10-yard touchdown run. However, the Chiefs began to rally as quarterback Matt Cassel completed a 54-yard and a 5-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Chris Chambers (the latter was followed up by Cassel's 2-point conversion pass to running back Jamaal Charles). Fortunately, the Jags' defense would prevent any further progress from Kansas City.

With the win, the Jaguars improved to 4-4.

at The Meadowlands, East Rutherford, New Jersey

Coming off their home win over the Chiefs, the Jaguars flew to The Meadowlands for a Week 10 duel with the New York Jets. Jacksonville would deliver the opening strike in the first quarter as running back Maurice Jones-Drew got a 33-yard touchdown run. The Jets would answer with a 32-yard field goal from kicker Jay Feely and quarterback Mark Sanchez completing a 7-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery. In the second quarter, the Jaguars came right back with quarterback David Garrard getting a 11-yard touchdown run and completing a 26-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker. New York would close out the half with Feely making a 37-yard field goal.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Jets would retake the lead in the fourth quarter with Feely booting a 40-yard field goal and running back Thomas Jones getting a 1-yard touchdown run (with a failed 2-point conversion). Fortuantely, Jacksonville would rally with Jones-Drew getting the team to New York's 1-yard line. Three plays later, kicker Josh Scobee would make the game-winning 21-yard field goal.

With the win, the Jaguars improved to 5-4.

Coming off their road win over the Jets, The Jaguars went home for a Week 11 duel with the Buffalo Bills. In the first quarter, Jacksonville hit the board first with kicker Josh Scobee hitting a 29-yard field goal. Then the Bills came on top when kicker Rian Lindell hit a 26- and a 28-yard field goal. In the second quarter Jacksonville took the lead back with RB Maurice Jones-Drew getiing a 3-yard touchdown run. The last play of the half was when Rian Lindell hit a 22-yard field goal.

In the third quarter Jacksonville fell behind when QB Ryan Fitzpatrick completed a 98-yard touchdown pass to WR Terrell Owens, but in the fourth quarter they came in front as QB David Garrard made a 3-yard pass to WR Mike Sims-Walker for a touchdown (with the two-point conversion).

With the win, the Jaguars improved to 6-4.
